But how does this guarantee that a brand or product will be able to hold its followers throughout the life? Does ‘the number of likes on facebook’ really add value to any brand or product in terms of actual profit realization?

        You are right. Number of likes on FB pages alone is not going to add value to your business or profit unless you have a great product and service to offer. After all, customer look for quality product.

        Social media is just a communication tool. It enables you to engage with customers and connect with more and more people. It reduces your communication cost and eventually help you serve customer better.

        About your question: Yes social media is widely used for support functions these days and more people are slowly moving away from calling toll free and non toll free numbers to connect with customer support because the line is always busy and takes several minutes to get connected.
        Companies spend more money to manage a call center. If the number is a toll free then expense will be even more. But when more and more people use Twitter or FB to connect with company service team, or sales team then all such expenses can be reduced to a great extend,, even less than a quarter because Twitter and FB are free to use.
