Rate this post

The days of websites getting ranked with little or no effects are long gone. The Internet market today,  is in a fierce competition and it needs loads of time, effort and attention to stand out from the crowd. So what kind of negative impact can a site have?

Be it a blog or an e-commerce website, there are a lot of things that matter. There are few things that one cannot ignore from SEO perspective. Just the looks and the design of website are not all that matters. We have to look at content quality and many other things at the same time too.

How many of us have looked at a website and decided to close the page? Just because it took too long or for any other reason?

Some websites have way too many ads which may not even serve the purpose of the website. Sometimes, we just get tired of scrolling and nobody has the time in today’s generation. Some website designers and beginner SEO’s are creating duplicate content which is one of the most common oversights. Duplicating content will not only dilute the value of your links contained within each web page but your site on the whole and can also lead to a penalization by Google.

5 Drawbacks That Can Have Negative Impact On Your Site

What are the different kinds of negative impact can these cause on our site?

Here is a list of common SEO mistakes you should avoid:

1) How long it takes for a page to load

Especially in e-commerce websites, they would be putting up a lot of pictures of their products. Not just pictures, but ad’s too. As it would seem logical, that the more ads a webmaster puts on the site, the more money the site’s owner will make. However, this is often not the case.

Having too many ads and pictures can cause the site to get dragged down in uncompressed image downloads, excessive scripting and more. All of these add to your site’s page weight and will have a negative impact. Ultimately, downloading a page with loads of pictures and ads would take too long. This could put your potential customers off.

For example, if you turn off your ads for one day, you would realise that the time to download the page could drop from 24 seconds t0 4. Which is very impressive!

2) The never ending scroll

While no technique is fundamentally bad, this design method is one of the most overused and misjudged design techniques on the web today.

While only useful for certain specific user intents. Many sites use it with the idea that it helps site engagement as visitors would not have to click, to get more information. Just give them a stream and they will be happy.   That use case is highly specific and focused. In fact, when used incorrectly it can hurt your site in terms of SEO, usability, and conversion optimization.

3) Crawlers

Crawlers are very active. They often take account for all information the website has to offer. They give out information to visitors and vice versa to websites all over the internet. The crawler is very active and will often visit a website several times a day to check for updates or new information.

Crawlers don’t like to slow down. As there are a lot of content out there, the crawlers use a lot of resources. If they are overloaded they move on out of necessity. Crawl budget is the amount of resources Google will use to record your site. There is no limit to the crawl budget as every site is different. Every resource call is a potential place for the crawler to crawl out of your site because of excessive trips to the server and back causing delays in page render.

There could be delays in page rendering. Have the Ad network failed to compress images? Are there any scripting errors? Are you loading content after advertising or forcing the crawler to wait for the rest of the information? All of these are situations where the crawler is most likely to stop indexing your site.

4) Negative ad practices

Certain ad practices are so negative that users have decided to start avoiding sites that have these ad types. They are ads like the autoplay video with sound, the autoplay video without sound, the disappearing autoplay and the disappearing autoplay video with sound that turns on even if the user have turned the sound off.

If you use any of these on your site, remove them. You are not likely to get the return you think you are. There is a possibility that users are just trying to turn it off. Therefore, you would get your customers furious and you may lose them.

It is better to get ad’s which work hand in hand with your line of business which is not harsh. This is can have quite a huge negative impact on our site.

5) Creating content without keyword research

Writing content without keyword research means you are ignoring the terms people are searching for and writing what no one is looking for. This is why you won’t get any clicks no matter how good your content is.

You must do proper keyword research before you start creating content. There are lots of tools, both free and paid, available on the internet for keyword research. You can use Google Adwords keyword planner tool to generate keyword ideas. Long tail keywords are easy to target as compared to short words. You can create long tail keywords by grouping different related keywords together and forming one keyword.

It is always benefitted to do your own research and analysis when it comes to keywords. Our goal is to get noticed.

While it is not easy to rank higher in search engines overnight, it is possible to avoid these common SEO mistakes that can have a negative impact on your site’s SEO score.
