Always, the companies look for the ways to maximize their revenue for every penny spent on the technologies or campaigns they execute. Email marketing is also one such investment which the companies use to get the desired return on investment (ROI). But exploiting this technology to get the best results, depends on several factors which each company should follow judiciously.

1. A quality opt- in database

Creating a quality data base is very important for successfully executing an email marketing campaign. Some methods for creating a quality data base are as follows:

  • Capturing the incoming web traffic coming into your website by asking the user to enroll for an online subscription using their email id. Online incentives, promotional offers, informational newsletters etc. are ways to interest the customers into enrolling for the subscription.
  • Using the double opt in or closed loop method for marketing campaigns also yields a quality database. This process involves sending opt in subscription mails to potential customers & then sending the confirmation mails (with links to activate the subscription) once the customer has enrolled for the same. This protects you from being blacklisted by the ISPs (Internet service providers)

2. Timely and relevant emails

It’s very important to send emails to the customers according to their interest and at an apt time. Make sure that you send emails with the offers on a particular product or service which interests the customer. This enables you to engage with the customer & up sell your other products/services as part of your promotional campaign.

Also inform the customers in advance about the expiration of subscription before it is getting automatically renewed.

3. Segmentation of the database

Always segment your customer database based upon the number of clicks & openings of the mails; interest in products and services etc. This ensures you are sending the apt mail to the customer thereby increasing your relevancy and higher engagement rates.

4. Choosing the email service provider(ESP)

Choosing an ESP which is legally complaint and well versed with the spamming laws & regulations is  a very important part of your successful email marketing campaign. It is essential your ESP is technologically advanced and is able to give statistics concerning the activity of email recipients.

5. Good relationship with the Internet service provider (ISP)

Maintaining a good relationship with the ISP can be worthwhile since you will be able to monitor the blacklists, feedback loop (FBL), bounce rates & on the deliverability of your emails.

      What is opt? Please expand. What is closed loop? What do you mean by ‘ESP, which is legally complaint? Please clarify.

        *The ‘opt in’ mentioned in blog is a terminology used for the way in which customer email is enrolled for the subscription emails. There are two methods ‘single opt in ‘ & ‘ double opt in’. The latter is already explained in the blog. Single Opt in basically involves enrolling the client email id through subscription forms in a sales show or exhibition(traditional method).

        *Closed loop is same as double opt in

        * ‘ ESP which is legally compliant’ means that the email service provider should be adhering to the laws concerning the spamming and other laws setup by the ISP
