5 Ridiculously Actionable Tips To Jumpstart Your SMS Marketing Campaign

If you are familiar with using Twitter, then narrowing down your message for a powerful impact in just 160 characters should be old hat to you. SMS messaging uses a 160 character limit per message and does not have a #hashtag search mechanism. Therefore, your verbiage needs to be clear and concise to result in action from the customer or prospect. Remember making Haiku in grade school? You need to only put in the words that offer meaning and substance, and leave out the rest. These tips will help you get started:

1. Acronyms are Out

Marketers are not teenage high school kids and customers do not want to have to decipher your gobbledygook. It is easy to turn off customers if you use too many unknown abbreviations. Everyone knows LOL, but the rest of the acronyms are known only sporadically within specific communities. Even kids will respect you more if your messages sound like they came from a professional. Use whole words and standard abbreviations when sending out messages to your SMS list.

2. Consider Your Branding

Branding is very important, especially when you are using a multi-channel marketing program. You want to link the marketing messages together in the customer’s mind. You have 11 characters to set your business name to the Caller ID, however your SMS recipients won’t have a phone number to reply to if you do. You are required to give them a method to opt out of your messaging program if you add your name to the Caller ID.
You will raise brand awareness by adding your name to the Caller ID.
A second option is to use the caller ID as the opt-out number, and use your business name in the actual message. This technique will most likely result in fewer complaints and a better organic reach.

3. Personalize Each Message

By personalizing SMS messages, you make the customer feel like you notice them, that they are special. The point of SMS messaging is to reach out and positively connect with the customer, not to pester them. Your goal is to persuade the customer to believe that your SMS messaging is a valuable asset allowing them to get unique benefits that others (outside the program) can’t. You need to generate a real value for your customers which can include any of the following:

  • Freebies
  • Discounts
  • Alerts
  • Videos
  • Link to a new app
Because they are receiving your messages.

4. Get Them Excited with Your Call-to-Action

A call-to-action is your rallying cry, or wake-up call, to get your customer to take action. You need a carefully thought out, concise call-to-action that will jolt them into picking up the phone or looking up your website. Within the context of your SMS message, you need to explain why you are sending the message, how your product or service will benefit them, and then issue the call-to-action. Tell them specifically what they need to do to respond in action words. Using a tone such as “Order the iPhone 6 now!” is direct and leads them to take action. Your link in the message should take them to the exact page where they can complete the action so as not to lose any momentum as they follow through.
You can ask them to call, click or respond via SMS.

5. Relevancy is Number One

Use the customer’s focus to determine the relevancy of your message. For instance, if a customer purchased a specific dining room set and the matching buffet cabinet is on sale, they will definitely be interested. However, they don’t want to be bombarded with constant messages from you. Create a strategy to communicate with your prospects and customers on a consistent basis in order to keep in touch without irritating them.
You need to find a balance between too few and too many messages.
With a consistent plan, you can stretch even a minimal marketing budget to achieve successful results using SMS marketing.
