Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process to increase the visibility of a page(s) or a website on search engines. It is also often referred unpaid, natural or organic results. For site/page optimization and to improve visibility a number of actions are taken both on-page & off-page.

1. No Proper Use of Keyword

Many a time keywords are added to web pages randomly with no brainstorming. This may lead to missing out on keywords that would have resulted to increase in traffic. For beginners it is best practice to use Google keyword planner tool.

Other then this there are also situations when web pages are overloaded with keywords, thinking this will boost traffic to their site. When web pages are stuffed with words or phrases, one very important Search engine optimization (SEO) point is missed out i.e. content quality. A page with good/quality content & limited keywords is ethical way to do Search engine optimization (SEO) and helps to improve search rankings. Such practices are penalized by Google’s search result ranking algorithm.

2. Duplicate Content

Definition from Google: “Duplicate content generally refers to substantive blocks of content within or across domains that either completely matches other content or is appreciably similar”.

Google aims to show visitors fresh content for better user experience but some websites deliberately duplicate content trying to manipulate search engines to get more traffic. And this actually leads to poor user experience. Sites with duplicate content have negative effect on their search ranking.  Many a time’s brands with ecommerce sites or large sites don’t realize that their site might contain duplicate content. Use the rel=”canonical” tag for pages that have same content.

3. No Proper Meta Description & Title Tags

The title tag describes the topic or content of the web page. This is useful for both Search engine optimization (SEO) & user experience as it briefly describes the page content to user.

Meta descriptions provide the concise explanations of the contents of web pages. Meta descriptions should be as persuasive and descriptive as possible. They are displayed on search engine result pages (SERPs) as preview snippets for a given page. A good description can increase your click through rate (CTR).

Title tags and Meta description are essential part of site optimization process. Some of the common mistakes to avoid are:

  • Duplicate title tags or Meta description for web pages. Instead they should be unique for each page.
  • Trying to stuff maximum keywords in the title tag & Meta description. Instead of stuffing keywords in the title & description, one should focus on quality of content for these and not keywords.
  • Writing long tile & description. Instead title tag length should be 50-60 characters & description should be 150 – 160 characters.

 4. Ignoring Broken Links

When a visitor clicks on a link and a page opens with page not found message or 404 error messages gives a bad impression to them and have negative impact. This way one may even loose a lead.  Not only this, it also has negative impact on search engine ranking and Google may move the site down in the search result pages.

The reason for 404 page showing up is user is looking for a page on the site that doesn’t exist or has mistyped a URL or the page has been deleted.

So to improve the user experience and optimize the web site for search engine customize the 404 page giving options to the user to navigate to other pages of the site.

5. Lack of Internal Linking

When a word or text on a web page is linked to another page or resource within the website it is called as internal linking. This is natural link building technique. These links are used by search engines to crawl pages within a website. So websites lacking internal linking are missing out opportunity to boost their search rankings. Site owners primarily focus on external linking missing out the benefits of internal linking.

Some of the benefits of internal linking;

  • More pages of web site are indexed by search engines.
  • Helps site owner to keep users stay on the website longer and engage more with website.

6. Forgetting the ALT Tag

An alt tag or alternative text tag is the text used to describe an image within a website. These tags are useful for search engines to learn about the image. So, using the alt tags the images are made search engine friendly. Keywords may also be added as an alt tag text but don’t overdo it. Avoid giving names like image1 or img1, instead using meaningful names for image optimization.

Conclusion

SEO makes website both users and search engine friendly. It helps the search engines to figure out what each page is about and how it may be useful for users. And it has a better ROI & is cheaper than traditional forms of marketing. The Search engine optimization (SEO) mistakes may seem basic but shouldn’t be overlooked or ignored. SEO is not a onetime process but it is a continuous process with search engines like Google constantly updating their search algorithm.
