Rate this post

social media 2The advent social media, has really brought about a huge change in the manner in which small businesses communicate with their clients/customers and market their services and products. Social media allows businesses, especially the ones on a smaller scale that do not have the luxury and deep pockets of big businesses to invest in heavy ATL or BTL activities, communicate with their customers in a more personal way to build effective business-customer relationships.

You need to make sure that your efforts are directed towards enhancing your presence and social interactions with your clients. Following are few tips that should be taken care by small businesses while entering the realm of social media.

1. Always plan the social media marketing strategy before starting.

It doesn’t matter what is the size of your business, to be successful on social media you need to have a strong and concrete social media marketing strategy. You need to have a concrete plan complemented by right execution. Make a roadmap of the objectives and the path you will follow, apart from the tools you need, to meet your marketing goals.

Your plan should clearly define how this small business of yours is going to integrate existing marketing strategies with social media marketing strategies. There are few important points that one have to consider before initiating such integration:

  •  Daily updates and tasks should be delegated to an employee experienced in social media and marketing.
  • You need to decide that who from your company will be responsible for creating different accounts and profiles. Also the details of people from the organisation who will be having access to these accounts.
  • You need to choose tools that will be helpful in automating the process of social media marketing. You also need to find analytics tools that will assist you in tracking success.
  • You need to review the current marketing strategies of your small business at the same time also decide which area would be most benefited from a social media expansion.

2. Finding your clients/customers

find customersWith the plethora of social media channels available to the users, it is a real task for the business to choose a social media platform to operate on. It is advisable to research where exactly the critical mass lies before just randomly starting of a marketing campaign on either Facebook or twitter.
Communities of customers with shared area of interest already exists. Thus it is better and takes lesser time, labour and money to target areas where your customers already exists rather than creating presence where you think your customers will come to you.

3. Scheduling of social time

scheduling social media timingOnce your small business have a customer base then you have to be present on that social media platform on a frequent and regular basis. Usage of social media networks is pretty time consuming. You need to schedule time on this social media for your marketing staff and for yourself as well.
You need to give enough time on daily bases to converse with customers, monitor conversations between different customers and in posting new messages. Splitting and sharing equal time on daily bases will be quite beneficial as it will tell the customers that you care for them and have quick responding time.

4. Try to be as human and authentic as possible

human touchpointIt is a well-known fact that relationships are created between customers and co. employees rather than businesses. When connecting via social media customers can be encouraged if a “human” voice is used rather than a corporate presence. You can adopt some easy techniques like on your profile display a photo rather than a business logo and assigning couple of trusted staff from your small business/co. to act as your social and official voice.

Another big issue of acting human on a social media channel that companies often find quite challenging is “owning up” to their mistakes to clients in public or when customers posts criticism. If a user complains regarding your services like shipping, handling or packaging do not try to ignore it or settle it outside the social media network. Keeping the conversation public, on a personal level and dropping the corporate tone can have better impact and favourable solutions to problems.

5. Try to be socially active

activeEffective conversational skills is the hallmark of successful businesses especially so on social networks. Thus it becomes imperative for your small business to display effective conversation skills. The main point of a social media presence is conversation, and if you are not participative enough then customers might get bored pretty. After all the better you respond the better feeling your customers have that they are being listened.

Businesses should display effective listening skills and encourage participation of customers by responding directly to comments and questions in a timely fashion. Encourage the customers in your social group by asking for their opinions, suggestions and direct questions. These activities gives a feeling to the customers that you are listening and valuing their comments.

6. Responding more often

respondingYour success on a social media platforms also depends on how quickly and effectively you can respond. You need to show to your clients that you are listening to them and you are someone on whom they can rely. Thus staying active and participating in all subjects and conversations pertaining to your area of expertise or company goes a long way in cementing your social media credibility.
