Content is definitely King, But SEO can make your blog more popular than your competitors’. Using the several plugins available in WordPress can help in improving SEO of your Blog. Are your competitor’s blogs consistently ranking higher than your blog? Do you have to click through several pages of results to see your blog? Then check out these 7 SEO tips to make your WordPress Blog outshine its competitors online.

1. SEO Friendly Theme

While searching for that perfect theme for your WordPress blog, search for themes which are SEO friendly in addition to the criteria of price and design. There are many theme developers who advertise SEO friendly themes and those actually work well in improving the SEO of your Blog. Look out for themes which have the right type of headers as per standard SEO practice. Furthermore, choose themes which have fewer images, fewer graphics and have a smaller code base, ideally such themes are lightweight and are preferable over others. Make sure the theme is fluid i.e. it can rearrange the elements in a page as required and make it easy for mobile surfing. Google generally ranks mobile/tablet friendly sites higher. Lastly, the themes should be compatible with SEO plug-ins.

2. Alt Text for images

Images on your blog can also be used to extract some SEO.  Alt text is used by search engines to recognize and understand what is in the image. Therefore, ensure that alt text has been entered  for all the images. In case the images are not found by the searcher, then this text will appear, so it is necessary to include the appropriate text for all the images. The beauty of WordPress is such that various plug-ins are available even for this feature. Such plug-ins automatically adds the post title and the image name to the alt and title tags of the image.

3. Breadcrumbs

A blog can have hundreds of different pages and thus, traffic can come from anywhere and can land on any page. Therefore, it is necessary to use breadcrumbs to ensure that the audience is able to find their way around the site easily from where they have landed. Breadcrumbs ensure that users are able to locate where they are and where they intend to go on the blog. Breadcrumbs also help in displaying the hierarchical structure and the menu of the blog. Search engines can also detect breadcrumbs and get to know the site structure for easier indexing. Several types of breadcrumbs can be used, like – location based, attribute based and even keyword based by installing the appropriate plug-in on the WordPress.

 4. Root Domain

There are 2 types of root domains – a WWW one or a Non WWW one and WordPress offers to enable both the root domains to reduce confusion. However it is necessary to enable only one root domain as some search engines are unable to recognize two root domains for a single blog and this can affect your site rankings. It is also recommended to remove the – index.php/index.html redirect domain as it can negatively affect the SEO of the blog.

5. SEO Plug-inimages (9)

Browse and select top ranked SEO plug-ins from amongst the many paid and unpaid options. Select plug-ins which takes care of all the SEO related functions like menu, descriptions, tags, keywords etc. Try to use plug-ins which automatically checks and fixes the SEO elements to make your work easy. A highly recommended plug-in is the SEO by Yoast, which is as important as the WordPress itself and its free. Some popular paid plug-ins is Scribe SEO – which analyzes the blog pages and gives a score based on how SEO friendly the blog is. Another one is SMS Booster Pro which makes a log of all the search terms that are used to find your blog posts. These terms can then be used as tags.

6.  URL stop words

Various stop words like and/ in are frequently used in the Blog post titles but do not benefit your Blog’s SEO in any way. As these words have been used in a Title they get added to the Blog’s URL by default by WordPress and end up diluting the SEO value of the URL. There are plug-ins available on WordPress to remove such stop words, use them to your advantage.

7. Link Structure

Link structure of the blog is an important element for SEO as it makes the search engines recognize your blog. Permalinks which are actually the URLs in the blog define the link structure. Tweaking them a little can improve the SEO. WordPress allows users to modify the permalinks via the settings tab. A simpler link structure would be such that the users should know what the blog contains by just looking at the URL rather than by actually visiting the blog. The same logic applies to search engines also. Customize your permalink in WordPress to improve your blog’s SEO.
