On page SEO optimization is one of the most important process to boost website rank and for the success of campaigns. Every business has a website and they want their website to rank at the top on Google search when some specific keyword is typed in the search box related to a website. Stuffing the website with keywords is not enough, it may give you a rank on Google search for some time but ultimately Google will catch you and penalize your website for following such practice.

Here in my blog, I am going to discuss 9 Easy On Page SEO steps you can follow to boost the rank of your website. Please note using SEO techniques mentioned below together will help you to improve the rank, Using one or two and leaving the rest won’t make any difference in your website rank. Let’s discuss these 9 SEO techniques in detail.

1. Page Title

Page title is one of the most important factor which helps a particular page of the website to rank at the top on Google search results. It is important to include the keyword in the page title so that Google can rank it at the top when someone search for that particular keyword which matches your page title. Each page title should be unique, meaningful and speak what the page is all about.

Try not to stuff the keywords into the page title, as sooner or later google will understand that the content of your page does not match with the page title or is not relevant to the user and your website performance will decrease. The page title should sync in with the content of the page. This is how the page title looks like:

page title

If you are not aware where to put the page title, no worries, you can ask your web developer to put the page title and they will do it for you. You can then check the page title at your end.

Previously the page title character limit was 50-60 characters, which has now increased to 65-70 characters. Make sure your page title is under the specified character limit.

2. Meta Description

Meta description is the summary of the page which you have to put under 278 characters. This is the description searcher will see when they search for something related to what your business provides. It should include your targeted keywords and to the point description. After all, this is what a searcher will read before they actually click on the link and land up on your website. If meta description has poor content and irrelevant keywords then your website may not get a good rank on the search result.

Write the meta description and send it across to the developer and they will put it on your web page. Each page should have a unique meta description and should speak about that particular page.

3. Meta Tags

For each page, you can include targeted keywords in the meta tags. These keywords should be relevant to the content of the page, and should appear in the content as well. Make sure that the targeted keywords sync with the content and give the desired information to the searcher and does not appear as it has been placed within the content forcefully. Good quality content is what Google is always looking for.

4. URL Naming

Use search engine friendly URL structure for each page of your website for better crawling. URL that includes targeted keywords perform better. For example: in the image shown below for Myntra the URL has “men-tshirts” keyword in it which will help the search engine crawler to understand about the page and show the result on search engine accordingly.

5. Heading Tags

While writing the content for a website or blog break up the content into small sections or paragraph. Adding heading tags like H1, H2, H3 and so on to the content makes it easier to read. H1 is generally reserved for the page title. Search engine uses these heading tags to determine which portion of the content is important. Keyword rich headings are more easily searched by google search than the generic ones. Write keyword rich headings in the order of H1, H2, H3 and so on, as they are used by crawlers to differentiate important content.

6. Keyword Research

Content is the king. Creating a quality content is very important for website rank. Use targeted keywords in the content and utilize the keywords in a uniform manner so that they do not break the flow of the article, but try not to overuse or excessively repeat the keywords, as this may lead to bad ranking and ultimately your site will be banned from search results. Keep the keyword density between 2-5%.

7. Image SEO

It is good to put images on the website but this should not affect the load time of the website. Use ALT tags to describe the image. This helps the search engine to understand what the image is all about. It would be good to give a name to the image instead of putting “image1.jpg” or any other random name which does not describe the image. As shown in the below image, the image is of a shoulder bag and the ALT tag also speaks about the brand and the image.

8. Robots File

These are very important part of SEO Audit. Robots file is simply a text file created on a notepad with an extension .txt. This file handles the crawlers. All search engine crawlers which come to your website, this robots file give certain instructions to the crawlers. For example, you have a website with 1000 pages and you do not want search engine crawlers to index certain pages like the page which is under development, personal login page, page that contains some private information about the organization, payment gateway pages, so this can be done through robots file. Let’s see how the robots file look.

So you can create a robots.txt file on the notepad and send it to your developer and ask them to upload the file on the root server. Your domain of the robots file should be domain.com/robots.txt

9. Sitemaps

Sitemap is a kind of index, it is like the index of a book which tell us how many pages are there, which chapter is on which page number. Sitemap is something similar. It is an XML file which lists all the pages of the website. So when you are creating new pages of the website, it gets added to the sitemap and it becomes easy for the search engine crawler to crawl all the pages of your website.

For any website you can create a sitemap with XML Sitemap creator, it is a free online tool. Simply put the URL of your website and it will create the sitemap for you, you can download the file and upload it on the server. You can also create an HTML sitemap as shown in the image below for digitalvidya.com. You may or may not create an HTML sitemap but XML sitemap is a must. The example of XML sitemap (left) and HTML sitemap (right) is shown below:
