Google Keyword Planner is not less than one man army when we talk about the SEO tools available today. The number of options one can play be are truly remarkable. Since Google is leading the search engine market, every marketer expected an extraordinary tool that would cater to their needs. Though opinions may differ globally, but here we have a tool which understands the advertiser, a marketer, search patterns and of course the customer itself. Here are the few basic functions of the tool which cannot be ignored.

The above picture depicts the opening window of Google Keyword Planner once you login to with the Adwords account here at https://adwords.google.com/KeywordPlanner. Once logged in,  you can select the tools section in the opening window. Here you will see 4 available options as seen in the picture. Google has carefully designed the tool in a way that, it is useful for both content creators as well as the advertisers.

Lets look at the primary available options:-

  1. Search for keyword and ad group ideas
  2. Get search volume for a list of keywords or group them into ad groups
  3. Get traffic forecasts for a list of keywords
  4. Multiply keyword lists to get new keyword ideas

To understand them in detail, lets dig in deeper for each of the options.

Search for keyword and ad group ideaskeyword-planner-Product category

This is how it looks like once you expand the option 1.

Here you are required to submit the details. The available fields are:-

  • Your product or service
  • Your landing Page
  • Your product category

Your product or service: Here you can enter the keyword important to your service, lets say ‘laundry service’. 1-3 keywords are recommended.

Your landing Page: Primarily used by advertisers, this option can also be used in case you want to know what your competitors are up-to if used alone.

Your product category: It provides a list of available options from the drop down menu so as to select our industry we operate in. Very handy if you are a beginner.

Get search volume for a list of keywords or group them into ad groupsget search volume

This further has two options:-

Option 1: Enter Keywords

Wherein you can enter your keywords to get search volumes.

Option 2: Upload file

Here you can upload a .CSV file.

Either of these two options would fetch you the results. However, if the search volume you are expecting has to be filtered specific to your location, use targeting wherein you can easily change the settings for country or city specific results. We can even filter out the negative keywords.

Get traffic forecasts for a list of keywordsTraffic estimates

Here also, you get two options:-

Option 1: Enter Keywords
Option 2: Upload file

Following submission of keywords, you will be directed to a new page depicting the details of daily forecasts. This would include the impressions, clicks, cost and avg. position on the search engine results.

 Multiply Keyword Lists to get New Keyword Ideas

This is done specially if the number of product offerings is huge, lets say in e-commerce websites there are thousands of products hence a user a search products in different ways. In such a situation it makes sense to have as many as permutations and combinations.
