Facebook Live Video

Facebook Live Video as a utility has been around since mid-2016 and has been growing in popularity around the world with each passing day. Video consumption has grown manifold in the last few years and is touted as the future of Digital Marketing by different experts and studies. Be it YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook or Twitter and even on SnapChat or Instagram, video has made inroads all around. As per eMarketer, number of digital video viewers will climb to 2.15 billion this year!r

And the marketers are increasingly using it to promote their business in different ways. One of the reasons for that is, Facebook Live Broadcast gets a much higher reach compared to directly uploading a video on Facebook (though that is also very useful and highly recommended) or sharing some video from third party sites like YouTube.

This is a complete guide for you to understand and utilise Facebook Live Video to its full capacity.

Broadcast on Facebook Live

There are two ways to do video broadcast on Facebook Live: on Mobile Phones/Tablets and on Desktops/Laptops. Here’s a methodology to do the same one-by-one:

  • Broadcast On Facebook Live Using A Mobile Device

It is very easy to broadcast on Facebook using your Mobile device. Here is a step-by-step method to do the same:

Step 1: Open the Facebook App on your smartphone. Click on “What’s on your mind?” status bar.

    Facebook Live Video

Step 2: You will see a drop-down with different options like Photo/Video, Go Live, Check in, Feeling/Activity, Tag Friends. Now tap the “Go Live” icon as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 3: Next you will see options to choose privacy settings i.e. whether you want your Facebook Live broadcast to be Public, to all your Facebook Friends only or to all your Friends except few. There is also an option to test out your Facebook live broadcast using “Only Me” privacy setting. Facebook Live also prompts you to add a description to your Live video as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 4: For example, I have added a sample description: “This video is to test Facebook Live on smartphone”. Once you had the description, you will see the “Go Live” option as shown in the screenshot below. Click on that and your Live video will start broadcasting. You can broadcast maximum for 90 minutes in a one go.

Remember that Facebook Live uses the front camera of your smartphone by default, you can change it to rear camera or back to front camera anytime while broadcasting, as per your requirement.

One thing to noted here is that the Facebook Live video is in square format, so whether you hold your phone in vertical or horizontal mode, doesn’t make any difference. While you are broadcasting your video, you will start seeing the number of viewers and comments made by them in the real time.

Facebook also allows you to block any viewer during the live broadcast by tapping the profile picture next to viewer’s comment and then tapping the “Block”.

Step 5: Once you are done broadcasting your video, click on the “Finish” button at the bottom of your screen (as shown in the screenshot below). If you somehow want to delete your video, there is an option for that too.

Once you click Finish, you will see the “Post” option to share it on your Facebook feed so that people who did not or could not view your live broadcast on Facebook can view it latter on, on your profile.

You can always go back to your posted Facebook Live video to edit its description, privacy settings or delete it altogether.

  • Broadcast On Facebook Live Using Desktop Device

Broadcasting on Facebook using a Desktop device is not as dynamic and convenient as the mobile devices. Primarily it is meant for the convenience of Facebook Page Admins who want to broadcast on their Facebook Pages. For businesses, this option can be used during panel discussions at conferences, presentation on stages,  i.e. when the scene is more fixed in nature.

Here’s how you can launch Facebook Live on Desktop devices:

Step 1: Open your Facebook page. Below the “Write Something” box, you will see some icons to quickly launch certain Facebook page features. One of these icons is “Start a Live Video”. Click on that as shown in the screenshot below.
Facebook Live VideoStep 2: Next you will be prompted to allow Facebook to access your computer’s camera and microphone. Allow that. Facebook asks for this permission only for the first time.

Step 3: Now Facebook will show you a preview of your video. You can set the angle of your camera accordingly for a better view. Next add a description about your video. For example, here I have added a description “This is to test Broadcast on Facebook Live using a Laptop”. Since here we are discussing from the businesses’ perspective, your description should be meaningful, to-the-point and enticing enough for the viewers to view your video. Next click on the “Go Live” button.

Step 4: The live video will now appear in the news feed of your fans and on your Page’s timeline. When you want to end your video, simply tap on the “Done” button.

Step 5: You can edit the video’s description on your timeline anytime, by clicking on the drop-down arrow in the upper-right hand corner of your video as shown below.

  • Test Out Using “Only Me” Privacy Setting

As shared earlier, using “Only Me” privacy setting is a very useful way to test your live video before making it public. This allows you to play around and understand the Facebook Live platform and fix-in any loopholes if needed. You can select this option on smartphones as shown in the screenshots below:

  • Entice Viewers To Turn On Sound

All the videos on Facebook auto-play in the newsfeed of viewers but by-default they are in mute mode. Make your Facebook Live videos visually appealing so that viewers feel like turning on the sound and viewing your video further.

  • Ask For Likes And Shares

One of the most important parameters which Facebook uses in its algorithm to gauge any post’s popularity is to see how many Likes and Shares it has got. So don’t feel ashamed, and ask your live broadcast viewers to Like and Share your video. This itself will help you to increase your video views a lot.

Conclusion

I am hopeful that the step-by-step methods in this article, and the accompanying tips will help you to launch the Facebook Live video on your mobile or desktop device. Let me know your thoughts in the comment box below.
