Recently the highly successful facebook page of Pizza Hut India was brought down by Facebook. The major reason was the violation of facebook promotions guidelines. Although latter on their page got restored again after of course, by the effort of the page admins who contacted Facebook to restore their page but it could have been a major upset for them having lost the contact with over 4,00,000 fans! And this is a wake up call for all the brands out there as their substantial investment of time, money & human capital can go in vain if their established pages are brought down by Facebook in an eye blink.
Mainly the promotions on Facebook must include the following (as it is by Facebook):
a. A complete release of Facebook by each entrant or participant.
b. Acknowledgment that the promotion is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Facebook.
c. Disclosure that the participant is providing information to [disclose recipient(s) of information] and not to Facebook.
Also, Facebook features or functionality, such as the Like button or checking in to a Place, should not be used as a voting mechanism for a promotion or to automatically register or enter a promotion participant. You need a double opt in or permission twice effectively. So, the idea is that competitions and promotions are fine – you just have to do it within the rules.
What do you think of these guidelines?
