Interview With Evan Carmichael, Director At Evancarmichael.com On Social Media Marketing

EvanEvan Carmichael helps entrepreneurs. At 19, he built then sold a biotech software company. At 22 he was a venture capitalist helping raise between $500,000 and $15 million. He now runs EvanCarmichael.com, one of the world’s most popular websites for entrepreneurs. His goal is to help 1 billion entrepreneurs. He has helped set 2 world records, works 20 hours per week, uses a stand-up desk, rides a Vespa, raises funds for Kiva, and created a line of Entrepreneur trading cards. He graduated from the University of Toronto and enjoys salsa dancing, being a DJ, and the Toronto Blue Jays.

Digital Vidya: What attracted you towards Social Media?

Evan: It’s an opportunity to reach people. I started because people were talking about my business on Twitter and I wasn’t a part of the conversation. At the very least, you need to recognize your champions and just say thank you. But if you want to create a movement, if you want to change people’s lives, if you want to get people talking, social media is one of the best ways to do it.

Digital Vidya: Why do you think it’s important for entrepreneurs, marketing professionals and students to learn Social Media today?

Evan: Marketing 101 is, you want to be where your customers are. Your customers today are using social media. If they are there, you should be as well.

Digital Vidya: According to you, what are the top mistakes committed by organizations today in leveraging Social Media?

Evan: They treat it like advertising. They broadcast. They spam. They promote. The end result becomes no engagement. People tune you out. They don’t want to hear you talk about how great you are. They don’t want you selling to them. Social media is about conversations and storytelling. Make me FEEL something about your company. Make me connect to you and your story. Share things that will make me think and add value to my life. Inject emotion into everything that you do. Once I know you, like you, trust you then I’ll buy from you. Think about what you’re sharing on social media right now. Would you actually share it yourself if it wasn’t from your company? Are you proud of everything you post? That’s the test. If you don’t love it, nobody else is going to either.

Digital Vidya: You led ‘Social Media for SMBs’ Webinar for Digital Vidya’s community. How was your experience in leading the Webinar?

Evan:

Digital Vidya: Please share top 5-7 takeaways from the Webinar you would like to share with our community.

Evan:

  1. Follow five step process.
  2. Since it is social media; hence it all about being social and valuing people of the company.
  3. One powerful and impactful tweet can do wonders in social media.
  4. You have no control on social media and you can’t control what your customers say about you, so the best way is to build so much equity to them that they start loving everything you create.
  5. If anyone talks about your brand, good or bad take its responsibility on you.
Digital Vidya: Do you have any suggestions for us to further increase the value of our Digital Marketing Webinars for our community?

Evan: It was a fun webinar and very well run. The only suggestion I have is to show the speakers in the video replay. I was on webcam the whole time but in the video replay I got afterwards it was just my slides and my voice – adding that personal element will help people connect better.
