Interview With Sanjay Mehta, Business Owner And Jt. CEO, Social Wavelength

Sanjay MehtaSanjay has been an early Internet entrepreneur, and with 15+ years of experience, at a hands-on level, he would also be one of the most experienced in this space in India. Sanjay Mehta co-founded his first startup, Homeindia.com, back in 1998 and ran it for 9 years, before divesting and exiting in 2007. Then, he took up a professional career, as COO of Compare Infobase Ltd., an 800-person Internet business at that time. After around 1-1/2 years at this company, he moved on to start his new venture.

He has now launched Social Wavelength, a social media management brand of Social PR Outsourcing Pvt. Ltd.

What interested you to enter into Digital Marketing industry?

Sanjay: During the early days of internet, I started a B2C e-commerce company by the name Homeindia.com way back in 1997-98. Later, I came into Digital Marketing through Social Wavelength.

How was your experience being one of the jury members at the Mobile Lions category at Cannes earlier this year?

Sanjay: It was absolutely an amazing experience to be in the Mobile Lions jury at Cannes. Rather, it was one of the most memorable times of my life. Being in the same room with 15 other experienced creative, tech and digital jury members & interacting with them was an experience in itself. Additionally, something fascinating as a jury member was to be able to look at the best of marketing work from all over the world.

Why do you think it’s important for entrepreneurs, marketing professionals and students to learn Mobile Marketing today?

Sanjay: Earlier, I led the webinar on mobile mindshift. Today is a point where if an individual has any query, the answers will be available on mobile. So, everyone is extremely dependent on mobile for any kind of activity. Moreover, it has become feasible to use this device anytime. Thus, it is very crucial to analyze that mobile is a crucial element for mobile marketing.

According to you, what are the key skill areas under Mobile Marketing?

Sanjay:  The key skills for mobile marketing are still the same as for Digital Marketing. It is important to know the dynamics of Digital Marketing to understand the dynamics of mobile media. Herein, the elements of local comes in. The physical location for instance: store in a mall.

If mobile screens are present, then it helps to understand the small screen and how to make the most of it, how to create mobile application, understanding the different operating systems viz. Android, Windows, iOS etc.

You led ‘Are You Ready For The Mobile Mindshift?’ Webinar for Digital Vidya’s community. How was your experience in leading the Webinar?

Sanjay: It is always great to do webinar with Digital Vidya. The number of people who were logged in, showed the level of popularity. A lot of interesting questions were posed by the participants. Overall, it was a very satisfying experience.

Sanjay: The key learnings from the webinar were that the attendees could understand the concept of mobile moment. It helped them to map consumer’s journey and the mobile moments which are part of that journey. Besides, it gave brands the opportunities and options to own their consumer’s mobile moments.

Would you like to share few words about the work we are doing at Digital Vidya?

Sanjay: I have been a fan of Digital Vidya for a long time. The objective of learning and teaching Digital Marketing to a large audience as a part of digital ecosystem is great job. A large number of professionals are getting ready through digital trainings. I have recommended a lot of students to Digital Vidya and will continue to do so.
