trak.in olaOla Cabs was launched in December 2010 by IIT Bombay Graduates Bhavish Aggarwal and Ankit Bhati. Ola Cabs initially started in Mumbai and soon expanded to more than 100 cities in India. To book a ride, customer have to access its mobile app which will track the customer location. Customers can book a car ride from the available car options ranging from economy to luxury travel. As customers have an app to book a car, drivers have a driver mobile app which is activated after a thorough background check of the drivers. Ride requests are received when a driver logs into the app. Once customer confirms booking, Ola generally sends an sms informing the customer about the car number and driver details. In November 2014, Ola also included autos in its range of offerings. Auto service started on trial basis in Bengaluru. Now it operates in cities like Delhi, Pune and Chennai. Ola has 40,000 autos in its platform from these cities. Ola prefers to be transparent in its rate policy hence before the ride starts Ola informs customers about the per km rate. Ola accepts cash as a method of payment from customers.

Bangalore based Taxi sharing app Ola has announced the launch of ‘Ola select’ for its loyal customers. Ola Select is a benefit program where its “select customers” viz. those who travel frequently and also display good behaviour will be offered the following benefits

Ola Select offer is applicable in select cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Delhi. Ola said that it will gradually expand this program to cover more cities and engage with more members in its user base. With Ola Select, Ola will be able to offer exclusive offers and custom build experiences to its customers. Thus Ola continues to find ways to increase engagement with its loyal customers.

With Ola Select, Ola cabs have joined the companies like Amazon and Flipkart in offering exclusive programs in the form of Amazon Prime and Flipkart First. However both these programs charge per year fees from its customers for upgraded services whereas Ola Select is an invite only program with no additional charges.

Ola aims to achieve 1 billion dollar gross revenue by the end of 2015. Currently, it has a staggering 60% market share. With its phenomenal success Ola continues to attract the attention of investors. Soon after its launch in December 2010, it received its first round of funding of $330k in April 2011. Ola received millions of dollars in series of funding from various investors like Tiger Global Management, Matrix Partners, Steadview Capital, Sequoia Capital and Softbank Internet and Media Inc. Ola cabs has recently got an undisclosed amount of funding from Ratan Tata. On 1st March 2015 Ola acquired Taxi For Sure for about $200 million.

Ola cabs is currently facing a fierce competition from its US based competitor Uber who launched its services in India in 2013. Both Ola and Uber are determined to change the mobility habits of its users. Customers have often faced problems while availing car rental. They have identified this gap and launched Ola cabs and Uber respectively to offer user friendly, fast transport at different price points to customers. Customers were earlier apprehensive of an app based taxi service system. However with reliable service and affordable pricing Indian taxi customers have warmed up to services of these companies even for a short travel. Indian taxi market is reported to be worth $9 billion. In terms of Uber users, it ranks second, next only to United States. Looking at the sheer size of young population there is tremendous opportunity for growth for both Ola and Uber. Uber made the price competition fierce by reducing its fare to Rs.30 for first 2 kms and then Rs. 7/- Rs.8/- and Rs.9/- for UberGo, UberX and Uber Black respectively. Ola and Uber have started coming out with various schemes to attract the attention of the customers. Their price war is a good news for customer.

There has been series of new offering from the Bangalore Based Taxi Giant Ola. Recently it launched its hyper local delivery app called Ola Store. Prior to that it launched Ola Café, an online food delivery service. With ‘Ola Select’ it plans to do everything to keep its repeat customers satisfied and happy. By rewarding its loyal customers Ola hopes to retain them for as long as possible.
