Web Analytics is very hard for all of us. Start simple, start free, focus on “Inputs” and “Outputs” in terms of initial reporting efforts and fall in love with SEO.” – Avinash Kaushik

Well summarized by one of the best know faces in digital world. It always pays to start light in the longest of the journeys, your web journey being one of them.

Getting started on the analytics journey requires a review of your own requirements and what you want to achieve from the analysis of your websites data. As mentioned above, start small and start free. You may not wish to start with a more complicated and paid tool available in the market as you first need to get accustomed to the basics and the free tools give you a plenty of data to get your skill honed.

So as you start on your analytics journey, starting with Google’s free analytics tool is the first step you can take. Implement it yourself or with the help of your IT guys, it starts throwing the data from the time it sits on your website. And data is throws though is useful as it is of your own website however, getting the real workable insights needs some adjustment in the reporting tool.

The three tips below will help you get started, remove the unwanted data in your reports by focusing on the relevant numbers and in the end, saving your precious time which you can utilize in decision making rather than sifting through the data.

1. Set-up Your Goals And Their Tracking:

Every business that has a website has a specific purpose of doing so. That’s your goal and this is what you need to set-up on your analytic tool to track it.

These can be:

  • Sales for an e-commerce site,
  • Frequent visitation for a content publisher,
  • Contact form submission for a lead generator,
  • Engagement and awareness for branding and,
  • Information dissemination for online support websites.

2. Identify The Source Of Traffics And Filter Out Unwanted Data:

It makes sense to know who your real visitors or customers are and who are the one should not be there on your site. For this, you may want to filter the traffic from your own IP address (to filter out your own employees data be it onsite or remote access) and also any one related to you as a business partner. Once these are filtered, you may find results showing URLs which are sending you the visitors who matter the most to you, as they meet the goals you have set for yourself.

3. Customize Dashboards:

Google Analytics provides you customization options not just for your reports but for other details too. Utilize this option not just to customize the dashboards as per your goals however, you can do it for your different teams (marketing, sales, design, content etc.) to provide them data specific to their tasks. Customize to pinpoint and what you have is lot of happy faces and tons of time at your disposal.

Hello Vijayant. Its a good effort by you. But in the text I’ve found some areas where either meaning is not clear or there are some editing errors, such as ‘in the longest of the journeys’,’of your websites data’, ‘it starts throwing the data from the time it sits on your website’, ‘And data is throws though’,’than sifting through the data’, ‘Frequent visitation’ and ‘online support websites’. As a reader of your blog I would sometime prefer to share it with my students, provided the text is moderately good.

Thank you Dr. Goswami for reading my article. Yes, there indeed are some grammar mistakes however, some of the pointers are correct in the context they are written.
“Longest of Journeys ” is used here as a metaphor for the life of a business and its web presence as they are in for a long term.
Editing might be required for ‘it starts throwing the data from the time it sits on your website’, and can be written as ‘it starts giving you the data from the time it is implemented on your website’,

For “And data is throws though:, it should be “And data it gives though”

In ‘than sifting through the data’ is correct as no one would like to spend time going through the data which is not in correct format or is totally unstructured.

‘Frequent visitation’ could be ‘frequent visits’, though both are correct.

‘online support websites’ is correct though we can use ‘websites which provided support online’ in its place.

Hope the above explanation helps. Thank you again for taking your time to read the blog and providing your valuable feedback.
