Everybody must have heard of custom reports when it comes to Google/Web Analytics. These are specialized report which gives user an overall idea of its website’s performance. There are some of the new features introduced by Google analytics  recently. Here are some tips on which can be trusted completely whenever in use:

1. Use Of Dimensions And Sub-Dimensions:

While concentrating on custom reporting, use what has been learnt and apply accordingly on the website. Also, check what kind of possibilities are available if already done before. Otherwise, click on custom report. Then click on  “Create New Custom Report” heading mentioned at the top right corner. One must remember that clear distinction must be made, so that custom report does not appear like a dashboard but a single report by itself. It caters to one dimension only as shown in the figure and several of its child dimensions. Therefore, while designing one should be very careful. Always remember that it cannot drag and drop things unnecessarily. After this, let’s just overview some of the key things. One must know how to add key dimensions. This includes traffic sources, acquisition, mediums, e-commerce, systems, and contest. All these dimension can be seen on the left side of the screen.

2. Metrics Measurement:

Now, metrics are measurements which involve time spent on page, number of visits or number of visitors. For instance, while clicking on a dimension called  “Traffic Sources”, select Medium and drag it to dimension tab at the center. Medium refers to what kind of traffic is coming to user’s website i.e. direct, referral, search engines etc. After the medium,  one should think of what will be the most suitable  sub-dimension. The most obvious thing for this is “Source”. If a website has both medium and referral traffic, then it’s easier to know which referral is  sending traffic to the website through metrics report. If it’s a search engine, user will get an overall look by looking at search engine but going further, if user want to see which are the search engine that are performing better one need to drag and drop source. Now to look at how this data is performing click on metrics and drag all the elements that one wish to track in the box, just mention below in blue highlights.

3. Preview Report:

Click on the “Preview Report” button at the bottom to preview it. Now, the outcome will provide details about all the elements of metrics that popped in the blue boxes as mentioned above. Always remember that this is overall information like for e.g. 665 are referrals, 49 via organic and only 210 are direct. Thus,  information like this can be traced and compared very easily. One can see the performance as well. Now, to see thereport about sub-dimension, click on any one of the attribute/element. For e.g. click on referral element. Similarly, for referral traffic as shown in the screen below, one can see the number of referred site and number of visits for the same.

At the end, dimensions basically involves referrals, campaigns, and pages etc. Lastly, one should choose metrics that are relevant to the dimensions being looked at.
