LinkedIn is a professional networking site designed specifically for the business communities and for people in professional jobs. The motive of this site is to allow members to register their professional profile and connect to the relevant networks of people and business related to their profession or industry.

LinkedIn is the largest and most dominant social network in the professional arena. Totally different from the likes of Facebook, it is used for maintaining a professional persona and brand. Other uses for LinkedIn include finding a job, networking, recruiting new employees, getting sales leads and even getting your business news.

Here are five reasons why I accept LinkedIn requests from everyone:

  1. Referrals
  2. Research
  3. Awareness
  4. Influence
  5. Branding

LinkedIn helps you expand your network its hard to do that if you won’t accept connections from people you don’t know!

“Word-of-mouth marketing is the best form of Free promotion”  -Bernard Kelvin Clive

The most easiest way to higher the best candidate is through referral, as it saves time and money. Now a days most of the organizations prefer candidates who have been referred by existing or ex-employees; to have a trust worthy atmosphere and for maintaining secrecy or confidentiality. Can also be termed as a method of promoting your LinkedIn profile through reliable sources or contacts. Basically the registered user has to find the right person who can introduce you to right point of contact . Also identifying specific people you want to meet, find them on LinkedIn, see if you have any common connections, and ask the contact to introduce you. If you don’t have a common connection, you can send them a short, personalized and value offering cold e-mail. Usually connection through a trusted friend is better than a cold call or e-mail.

Advantages of hiring a referral candidates are:

1. A referred candidate is faster to hire than the other candidate.

2. A referred candidate is cheaper to hire than other candidate.

3. A referred hire can be on board in short time.

4. An employee who successfully referred a candidate will stick to the company for long-term.

2. Research

Research indicates that employees have three prime needs: Interesting work, recognition for doing a good job, and being let in on things that are going on in the company. -Zig Ziglar
One has to be proactive about creating opportunities for self. If you are an employee you have to connect people with similar interests , join forums attend or go to relevant conferences, events, and classes to meet the kinds of people you want to meet. If any employee has to grow professionally he must be updated with the latest technologies in use. LinkedIn has a vast database and network of different industries. One can do an extensive research based on his requirements. For example A business owner has to invest in a new venture and he doesn’t  have any idea how to do. He can use the LinkedIn professional network to research about the industry, competitors and connect with people or consultants from the same industry who can help him to set up his new firm.

3. Awareness

The most important aspect and building block for any professional or business is to get noticed. Not only getting noticed but also to make a right impact. Make you online presence through LinkedIn connect to related industry to build a strong network. One has to find ways to add value to others without expecting anything in return. When you help someone in one way, they will naturally want to reciprocate. In turn, by helping people in your network, your network gets bigger, and you get stronger. Make relevant and mutually beneficial introductions between people you know. Share your advice, ability, or feedback. Share information such as events, articles or research that they would find helpful. Promote the products they’re promoting by sharing it with people you know.

4. Influence

Create and share opportunities, status updates, group discussion and blog posts on your LinkedIn Platform which is relevant to your industry which may directly or indirectly help others. Every content you share on LinkedIn is valuable to your network and we want our network members to feel compelled to share our content with their networks. Build rapport with your network connections by sending personalized messages or invitations, comment on their post and engage in personalized conversations. Find their personal interest outside of business; strike up conversation related to that topic through LinkedIn messaging feature.

5. Branding

“It’s important to build a personal brand because it’s the only thing you’re going to have.Your reputation online, and in the new business world is pretty much the game, so you’ve got to be a good person. You can’t hide anything, and more importantly, you’ve got to be out there at some level.”- Gary Vaynerchuk

Maintain a decent profile picture on LinkedIn against a backdrop of your recent company branding or logo. Use essential keywords while writing your professional headline and if possible you include your company name, email and contact details. Also be specific of your place you are based highlight the organization usually hires a candidate based on their home place. Brief about your profile including the details about your company its products and services. Include last 3 recent job experience along with your job titles, roles and responsibilities. Highlight your achievements with real facts and figures. Mention your educational qualifications and professional certificates if any. Add your skills related to your job profile and ask for endorsements from your seniors and colleagues . Last but not the least important always ask for recommendations from your reporting managers or bosses, recommendations always boost up the profile and they have more credibility.

Meeting and building relationships socially and professionally requires a lot of time and effort, but the benefits in terms of learning from others and opening doors can be invaluable. It is like and long-term investment where you pay in today and earn the benefits for a long time.
