5 Strategies To Achieve Your Social Media Marketing Goals

There are many reasons social media can be a productive marketing channel or a platform. Rather than implying it as a necessity, the purpose should dictate strategy and the tactics used for reaching desired goals is very important. Social Media has become an integral part of our lives. We use various social media applications in our day to day life for various reasons. Social media helps to stay in touch with our friends and family, to network with colleagues and other professionals, to share photos and videos with friends, to follow and get updates from celebrities and friends we follow, etc. Besides using social media for personal reasons, marketers and business men also use the same to promote their business. Again this can happen in various ways like bringing traffic to a business website, getting sales, creating brand awareness, generating leads, etc. Hence, we can see that various people have various goals and objectives to be achieved from using social media platforms. In order to achieve these goals, one needs to take the right steps at the right time to get the best results in the correct time as and when required.

Following are the ways in which one can go about achieving one’s goals and make the best use of social media marketing :-

1. S.M.A.R.T.

Specific – The first step of moving towards achieving one’s goal is to be absolutely clear about it. That is to have complete clarity on what is that is to be achieved out of this goal. In order to do so, one needs to ask and answer the five “W” questions, which are, Who, What, Where, Why and Which. By getting to the answers of these questions, one will have complete clarity one the objective of one’s goal.

Measurable – It always helps if you can measure the outcome of your goal. This is important as this will help one know how much distance has been covered and what is yet to be covered to reach the desired result.

Attainable – This is a very important aspect of setting one’s goal. Is it realistic? Can it be achieved as per your expectations? If the goal set is such that is not realistic and not achievable, then the efforts put towards the same can go in vain.

Relevant – The goal being relevant is very crucial. If the final outcome of the goal is not relevant to your business growth, then the time, effort and money spent for the same will turn out to be a waste.

Time bound – The goal should always have a deadline within which it should be completed. Keeping the target date open ended can lead to failure.

In this way, you can ensure that you give a good start to your process of achieving your goal. This method is assured to give good results and optimum output as it employs a structured and systematic approach to goal achievement.

2. OKRs – Objectives & Key Results

What is an Objective? An objective is basically a broad form of goal which one intends to achieve. It is a goal which is in a form which cannot be measured.

And Key Results is an outcome of an objective, which can be quantified.

Hence, by setting an Objective and Key Results to be achieved, one can clearly strategize the process of achieving a goal and measure the outcome achieved. This concept is so simple that it can be adopted and executed by many. One needs to determine the objective that needs to be achieved and also quantify the same with a number, which needs to be chased.

This concept was developed by Intel and used by main leading organizations like Google for achieving their marketing goals.

3. BSQ – Big Small Quick

This concept is similar to what we have seen earlier. Here, one needs to identify one’s ultimate goal – hence think Big, next, one needs to evaluate and set Small steps in the form of milestones which one need to target to finally achieve the ultimate goal, lastly, define a timeline and take Quick pre-determined actions to achieve each of the set milestone.

4. BHAG – Big Hairy Audacious Goal

This concept is a little different from the rest in terms of its framework. It is a concept which focuses on the visionary aspect of goals. It is mainly used for setting up goals on a broader scale. It can be used by organizations to set their larger goal towards which each of its teams should work towards. This gives a common direction in which all teams can align their efforts in order to achieve the larger objective of the organization. Unlike other concepts, here the timeline is very long, running into 10 to 30 years.

5. Growth Hacker

This concept of goal setting focuses on the steps as listed below. This concept details the entire process in a number of steps which needs to be followed from start to finish. It is similar to other goal setting concepts except that it is followed in more detail. Also, here the monitoring of the outcome is done to check if the efforts taken are yielding the set results. If it is seen that the set result is not being achieved, then the required tweaking of the process is done to achieve the set results. Another unique feature of this concept is that here the whole team needs to get involved and share the progress report. By doing so, there is transparency in the team and it also helps in directing the efforts in one direction.

  • Form Hypothesis
  • Select Key Performance Indicator (KPI)
  • Set Goal
  • Execute
  • Track Progress
  • Socialize or Iterate

The selection of the concept depends on the type of social media goal which can be activity based, audience based, engagement based or ROI based. Hence, by identifying the type of goal and the type of business, one can zero down on the concept which can be adopted to strategize and achieve social media marketing goals.
