Digital India To Become 1$ Trillion Economy in 2020

As per the statements of Ravi Shankar Prasad, Digital India will soon be a $ 1 trillion economy in the next 5 years since Digital India is progressing well. On presenting the achievements by Ministry of Communications & IT in these two years, Ravi Shankar Prasad, cabinet minister of communications & IT said

“Digital India will be a $1 trillion economy in the next 5 years”

His comments on breakup of Digital India

“Electronics manufacturing will contribute $400 billion, IT and ITES will contribute $350 billion and $250 billion will come from the communications sector.”Source:

Removal of Policy Paralysis

Policies related to spectrum sharing, spectrum trading, defense band identification, spectrum liberalization, full mobile number portability, virtual network operator, and sharing of passive and active infrastructure which were long due was cleared by the Modi-led government.

Increased Transparency

There has been a shift from corruption to transparency which helped in earning highest ever revenue of Rs. 1.10 lac crore from Spectrum Auctions 2015.

Transformation by BSNL

According to analysis reports, operating profit of BSNL is expected to touch nearly Rs. 2,000 crore in Financial Year of 2015-2016. They will recover from the loss of Rs. 8,000 crore in FY 2013-2014. Talking about mobile additions, BSNL has 23 lakh new mobile additions in March 2016. This is the highest number in terms of net addition according to TRAI data. There is also an achievement of operationalising 2,000 Wi-Fi hotspots pan-India.

Increasing Mobile Connections

During 2014-2016, mobile connections have increased by 12.26 crore which has increased the overall mobile tally to 102.71 crore and mobile teledensity to 80.95%. Also, full mobile number portability (MNP) was introduced so that users can keep and retain their mobile number. It has been promised that 55,669 villages will have mobile connectivity by the year 2019.

Connectivity for Gram Panchayat

50,732 Gram Panchayats have optical fiber laid by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). The department has laid 143,000 optical ducts whereas optical fiber to the tune of 115,783 km.

Status of FDI Improved

From $1.6 billion in FY 2012-14, the telecom Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has reached to $4.09 billion (Rs 27,000 crore).

Transformation in Postal Department

India Post ranks the highest in the number of core banking branches in India in relation to State Bank of India. While there are 16,066 branches of State Bank of India connected to core banking, India Post has as many as 22, 137 branches connecting to the core banking. The postal department has the plan to provide 120,000 gramin dak sewaks along with handheld terminals to empower postman in rural India. Whereas for the urban postman, they will be provided with mobile phones and smartphones by the year ending 2016.

Speed post has been ranked as the best express mail delivery service across India by CAG. The revenue of Speed Post for FY 2015-16 has touched nearly Rs 1,600 crore. The cash on delivery collection has increased to Rs 1,300 crore in the financial year 2015-16 from Rs. 500 crore in FY 2014-15. Talking about the India Post ATM, it has now reached 942 as on May 2016. India Post is going to launch Payment Bank services from March 2017.

Achievements in Electronic Manufacturing

For April 2016, the total investment in electronics manufacturing for Make in India will be of Rs 120,000 crores. Whereas mobile manufacturing has reached 11 crores in the financial year 2015-16 from 6 crores in FY 2014-15. This shows an increase of 83 percent in the growth rate. In India, there are 17 new mobile manufacturing units giving employment to 40,000 people.

Achievements in IT

With the plans to develop our own supercomputer by the end of 2017, the Indian IT sector has achieved new heights. The total revenues of Indian IT sector have reached $143 billion out of which exports account for over $108 billion.

Profits made by CSCs

As on May 2016, the department had around 2.05 lakh CSCs giving the government to citizen services for nominal charges. The government is also trying to increase the scope of CSCs in order to become profitable in the long run.

Enablement of Aadhaar

By May 2016, Aadhaar enrollment reached about 101.11 crores. The government has been successful in saving over Rs 15,000 crore in FY 2014-15 in the Pahal scheme. They did this by eliminating 3.5 crore duplicate beneficiaries. The Government of India has transferred Rs 61,000 crore in FY 2015-16 to 30 crore beneficiaries in the DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) scheme.
