Chandan Das is an engineering graduate in Computer Science. He started his career as a Digital Content Manager in an air quality management company called Atlanta Healthcare. Chandan got a taste of Digital Marketing when he started freelancing as a Content Writer in 2011. Since then, he kept on learning about various channels and how to effectively market there.
Importance of Digital Marketing
Chandan got his first job because of the theoretical knowledge he possessed in the field of Digital Marketing. However, since he was determined to grab control of entire Digital Marketing, he joined Digital Vidya’s Digital Marketing training program so that he could learn from the best. As the course advanced, Chandan gained hands-on experience of everything that was taught during the live sessions.
In just 9 months of his joining, Chandan is now the Digital Marketing Manager at Atlanta Healthcare.
Which course of Digital Vidya you participate in? How did it help you acquire new skills related to digital marketing?
Chandan: I joined the Certified Digital Marketing Master (CDMM) Course offered by Digital Vidya.
Before I joined this course, I had theoretical and some mechanical knowledge of creating campaigns across digital platforms. Joining the CDMM course helped me understand the channels in depth. The trainers helped me understand the best methods of creating, monitoring and optimizing a campaign on various digital channels.
Why did you choose Digital Vidya’s course?
Chandan: I was on look out for an online training center for Digital Marketing and I had attended live demo with two other institutions but I did not get that confidence about them. I wanted to join a course that would not teach me digital marketing but teach how to effectively apply digital marketing in real time. I am glad that I found Digital Vidya and when I attended the live demo, I had that confidence built in me and I knew I could rely on Digital Vidya to help me become a better Digital Marketer.
How has the course contributed in your career growth including new job opportunities?
Chandan: As I had mentioned before, I started out in my company as Digital Content Manager. As I advanced with the course, I started taking additional digital marketing initiatives. At first, it was Email Marketing and then social media marketing, search engine marketing and even e-commerce marketing. In six months I was handling the entire digital marketing portfolio in my company. After just nine months, I got promoted to Digital Marketing Manager.
Today, I am looking forward to joining a bigger venture that would allow me to handle bigger budgets and team with which I can achieve more than what I have achieved until now. I think in addition to the knowledge, Digital Vidya has also helped me gain confidence about my marketing plans.
Why do you think it’s important to learn Digital Marketing today?
Chandan: Today every business requires digital marketing. Take any industry, e-commerce to beverage, Digital Marketing generates at least 40-60 percent of revenue stream. In my opinion Digital Marketing is yet to mature completely in the Indian market and there is a huge scope of opportunity in this field. Hence, it is now a MUST thing to learn Digital Marketing if your interest lies in the marketing field.

What is your advice to newbies who want to build career in digital marketing?
- Without second thoughts take the leap.
- Build as much hands on experience as you can.
What are the challenges a person is likely to face when s/he enters into Digital Marketing industry? How can s/he overcome those?
Chandan: The biggest challenge that I see in Digital Marketing is knowledge of optimization. Everyone can learn how to build campaigns but the question is “Are you building the most effective campaign?” and there are not many whom you can look up to for effective optimization tips. The only way to find out what will work best for you and your company is by experimenting.
For someone who’s looking at full time or part time job or an internship in Digital Marketing, what approach would you advice?
- The way digital marketing is evolving, companies want to hire someone with an established record in digital marketing. A newbie should get into an internship and work hard to set an applaudable record. Once you have that record, you should go ahead and apply for jobs. I think its best to start your career with a startup as you will get the freedom to experiment and improve your skills.
- The most important advice I would like to give to people is that “Know your worth”. There are companies who are looking to exploit your knowledge for a bare minimum of 15K-20K. In my opinion this is insulting and one should have the courage to say NO. If you are well versed with your skills then a good opportunity will come your way. I think digital marketing freshers are more valuable than a TCS/Infosys fresher and its very important to realize that wait around for the right job with the right pay.
Digital media especially Social media channels such as Facebook can eat up a lot of your productive time if not used wisely. Do you agree? What all can one do to efficiently leverage these channels for personal growth?
Chandan: I too spend a lot of time on social media channels but as a digital marketer, I keep an eye out for new trends and posts. The advertisements I see on facebook and other social media channels always give me an idea about what other companies are doing.
Whenever I see an ad being targeted at me, I try to figure why am being targeted. What behavior of mine caused the ad to make me a target audience and how relevant I was to convert for that particular ad. This sort of analysis helps me form better targeting audience for my ads. I think everyone should keep an eye out for these things and that would be a good way of using these channels for personal use and skill enhancement.
If you were given a chance to rebuild your career, what changes you would have made to have even better growth and fulfillment?
Chandan: Actually, I would not change a thing. I started freelancing as a content writer when I was in my 11th grade and since then slowly I was inclining towards the world of Digital Marketing. Also being a B.Tech graduate in CSE also helps you understand the technicality behind SEO and many other things in Digital Marketing.
How do you see Digital Media evolving in future?
Chandan: I see it becoming more mature in the future. Even now there are companies that don’t understand Digital Marketing completely and have not discovered its full potential. For example, the real estate builders such as Sobha, DLF, Purvankara etc. mostly do not leverage social media much for customer engagement. Although their prime goal is to generate leads and they are doing it effectively through SEM, I think social media can play an integral role in getting them more qualitative leads.
Similarly, there are many such sectors that are yet to realize the importance of Digital Marketing in India. I am positive that few years down the lane, these sectors would realize the potential and that would lead to growth in the number of jobs in the field of Digital Marketing.
Would you like to share few words about the work we are doing at Digital Vidya in educating others about Digital Marketing?
Chandan: I think Digital Vidya is doing a great job. The fact that you have appointed market influencers as trainers is really great. As I mentioned earlier,
I attended demo classes with couple of other institutions and there the trainers did not give me the confidence of educating me practically. Everyone can teach Digital Marketing theoretically, in fact I can do that too. But Digital Vidya has the education model where every participant gets to have hands on experience while going through the training. This is the best thing about Digital Vidya according to me and they are rightfully India’s #1 Digital Marketing Training institution.
