Interview With Satyam Gambhir, Web Analytics Lead Trainer At Digital Vidya

Interview with

SatyamSatyam Gambhir is a Digital Marketing Consultant with Mindtree Ltd. and based out of Bangalore. He has spent more than 5 years understanding nuances of internet marketing and assisted start-ups in India and abroad to achieve their marketing goals.

His first job was when he was 18, with Discovery Channel as a customer care executive. He then moved to pizza hut, learnt how to prepare & deliver pizzas; co-founded a BPO with a friend. Later became a project trainer in a KPO and the journey is still on.

After a couple of years of experience, he moved to a B School in Pune, learnt and unlearnt a few things & joined Infosys. He was hired to consult clients over digital marketing strategy and technologies, where he was fortunate to work with the industry experts. He was, in parallel working on his blog on digital marketing which later went on to becoming one of the best web address for marketers in India.[spacer]

Digital Vidya: Tell us about your current role & profile at Mindtree.

Satyam: With Mindtree we are working towards building a cloud platform for social entrepreneurs with primary focus on livelihood. The first solution on the platform aims to improve lives of rag-pickers named ‘I Got Garbage’, an attempt to integrate rag pickers into the mainstream economy by increasing livelihood opportunities and serving cities at the same time by helping manage waste better.[spacer]

Digital Vidya: How did you get into Digital Marketing?

Satyam: I was introduced to Marketing in a class by an academician, which may not be the best way to bump into this art. Moreover, books and lectures can only do so much.

Quite soon I realized that one needs to sell to mature as a marketer. I started selling text!

I created a blog, created content & started to sell. The act of writing can be a better teacher than the one in class. I used to read, listen, practice & publish. So, not only I learnt marketing mostly by reading & writing about it, I practiced by selling the same, digitally.

Shortly, I was approached by my readers who wanted to hire me for some of their marketing related stuff; as of now I have worked with over 10 different clients from varied industries.[spacer]

Digital Vidya: Why do you think it’s important for entrepreneurs, marketing professionals and students to learn Digital Marketing today?

Satyam: I don’t think so! It’s not important for entrepreneurs, marketers or students to learn digital marketing. It’s important for us to experiment and see what works! Digital marketing is not the solution to every business problem; at the same time – marketing a business online may be a means to an end.

Here is an example, only lately I realized that IT can play a significant role in managing crops in a farm; or how digital media can assist a rag picker live a better life. One the other hand, at times, email marketing is of little use to a big FMCG firm – strange, isn’t it?

I hope I’ve answered your question.[spacer]

Digital Vidya: What kind of Digital Marketing training programs you lead at Digital Vidya? Feel free to share any interesting experiences you’ve had while training at Digital Vidya.

Satyam: I started taking social media analytics session with Digital Vidya. These days I am covering web analytics part of the course.[spacer]

Digital Vidya: Please share top 5 takeaways your training participants get out of their participation.

Satyam: I would rather mention what my goals are! At this moment, since I am taking sessions around analytics I will keep myself to it,

As a facilitator, my aim is to make participants comprehend the philosophy of measurement & analysis. While ‘how-to’ analyze is an easy part, ‘why’ & ‘what’ isn’t!

Another thing, I would sincerely want all participants must take away from my session is; answers are never important, how you approach a problem is. I refrain from giving answers, they are usually not the reason why I conduct sessions.

Whether you call digital marketing an art or science; in either way one can master it only when one practices. Case studies are there to excite participants, but may not make you an analyst; unless you get hands on the keyboard.

Finally, last take away, before I forget to mention: introduction to web analytics.[spacer]

Digital Vidya: What do you like most about training at Digital Vidya?

Satyam: The thing about sharing knowledge with people is – it’s always mutually beneficial. With Digital Vidya sessions, the participants come from varied backgrounds and questions are mostly more enriching than the session. The enthusiasm during sessions is commendable.[spacer]

Digital Vidya: Do you suggest any changes to Digital Vidya, so that the value of its courses can be enhanced further?

Satyam: You guys are doing a great job, keep up the great work! I guess, it’s time Digital Vidya (including the trainers) can think of investing in a single collaboration platform where students & alumni can join in the discussion. A self help Digital Marketing FAQs managed & edited by the community of current and past students. This portal may as well take a shape of recruitment portal where students can look for internships & find mentors.[spacer]

I appreciate the suggestion given by Satyam at last. I would like to know about Digital Media’s social responsibility? The question came to my mind after reading your words on ‘rag pickers’.

    Hey Indrajit, thanks for commenting!

Media is powerful, so is digital media… And as they say, with great power comes great responsibility. Media has the ability to influence minds of the free world. Digital Media, having the out-reach can play a role in influencing people and crowd-source sentiments & funds for the greater good… at the least!

I mentioned ‘rag pickers’ because I am working with a team which is trying to make rag-pickers live a dignified life with intervention of technology; and digital media has a role to play in reaching out to people for support & to build that mindset and sentiments.
