Looking for a platform to have real insights from more than 50 CMOs, VPs, Business Heads, etc.? Well, Great Indian Marketing Weekend (GIMW), 2014 is one place which can help you out in this. It is a sales and marketing event which is lined up with myriad numbers of workshops, panel discussions, keynotes etc.

Therefore, there was a panel discussion on Sourcing Marketing Talent led by Mr. Kapil Gupta, OM Logic; Mr. Rohan Arora, Bueno; Mr. Sandipan Ghosh, Ruchi Industries; and Mr. Sunil Kumar, exchange4media. A couple of insighgts shared by the panelists are:

Kapil Gupta:

  • Experiential aspect of marketing is becoming very crucial.
  • It is not important for Marketing person to be MBA, it is important for the Marketing Person to understand the use of product and need of customer.
  • People having journalism background are great marketing personnel.
  • MBA is not important but the mindset of business administration develop great Marketers.
  • Don’t think about 4 or 5 people which you have hired but get engaged with all those people who are associated with them including their families, friends etc. as when they are combined then it creates a brand.
  • When we hire a personnel, we struggle in deciding what things we can provide to him / her as per his / her skills.
  • We talk about a lot about of activities we do with the employees in OM Logic and we ask people who left us because they understand our business and will provide genuine referrals.
  • Keep employees interested about their work so as to retain them for the company.

Rohan Arora:

  • You needed MBA or any other degree because of society need earlier.
  • Kids at the age of 10 start using iPads and such devices so they have much more knowledge these days.
  • Three things I look for while recruiting marketing personnel are:
  1. Look for whether he is interested to learn,
  2. He / she should be twitter himself and should know where is the actual pulse, and
  3. He / she should know how to get engaged with people because that is what a brand is doing with customers.
  • Resumes / CVs are things of past. I don’t hire people on resumes but I hire them on references.
  • In order to retain hired marketing personnel just set them free.

Sandipan Ghosh:

  • Beyond being just MBAs people who are more insightful are becoming useful resources these days.
  • When it comes in consulting / FMCG companies, MBAs becomes a benchmark.
  • It is about networking such as in conferences, seminars etc. we interact with people and source them for our company.
  • Along with MBA, it is important to have life interest. It should have right blend.
  • It important to make each player of a team as captain for himself so as to retain them in the organization.

Hence, the session concluded that it is mindset of business administration which matters and not MBAs.

In such platforms, speakers must avoid making judgmental comments. Its against any professional ethics. We understand in many emerging job responsibilities, MBA alone is not enough. The guys need to have something more. As mentors we need to guide them and their institutes so that MBAs can be oriented accordingly. I appreciate views expressed by Mr. Ghosh. His words were more balanced.
