SEO is the process of making pages as relevant as they can be for search engines. This is to make search engines believe they are valuable enough to be considered for top rankings for as many key-phrases as possible in organic and natural listings. It is not known for sure on how to get to number 1 on Google completely, but getting to number one in Google is mainly down to the reputation of your website and how relevant your pages are to various keyword queries.

Content is the pillar of strength of a thriving business. You’ve probably heard or seen the saying, “content is king” in many places. But there is way more to successful content marketing than just creating good content. It is important to create and publish content that will increase your traffic and grow your business. You’ll notice that when you start creating in-depth rich content, there will be a corresponding increase in traffic. A website with great content can do great with or without SEO. But a website with bad content will not survive with or without SEO and a website with good engaging content can become even better with search engine optimisation!


Content helps create a line of communication between you and the customer. Effective communication increases customer retention by 88% and will increase your brand awareness by 87%. Traffic-generating content also makes the user happy and builds trust. So what kind of content should you include?

Original Content: Articles, text, images, videos, presentations, infographics, comments etc.

Content published first on your website: Even if it’s your own unique content, if it has already been published on another website then it’s not good practice to publish on your website.

Content with Text: Have text to accompany your non-text content. For example- if you post videos on your website try to add a text description as well below or next to the video. For images try to describe in words what the image is about in short.

Useful Content: Do not publish content for the sake of publishing content. Before publishing make sure that what goes live is actually adding value to your website.

Well researched Content: Users and search engines don’t want to read quickly prepared posts. If you are writing about a certain topic or answering a question, then make sure that what you are writing is justified and covers both sites of a story.

Avoid low-quality content: The days of generic content with no value are long gone. For your content to be of high-quality, you’ve got to research adequately, and spend enough time writing the best blog post you’re capable of writing. The content had to be unique and have quality.

Avoid writing thin content: Content may be high-quality in terms of the information that you are sharing, but if you want to give your blog a boost in the search results then it is important to increase your content length while also being to the point.

Page Titles, Description & Formatting

When reading your pages on your website, search engines check the page title, the description of the page, the major headings and images. They do so mainly because they need to understand what the page is all about and then based on various other factors like off page SEO, domain authority, competition etc. Search engines then place your page in a position in their index.

Page titles: Each page must have a unique title that will help users & search engines to understand what the page is talking about. For example: A page with title “On Page SEO Tips” is better than a page with title “index.html”. Page titles are one of the most important SEO factors on your website. Each of your  website pages & posts must have their own unique title that includes the main list of keywords for that page. For example: If you writing a blog post about a new chocolate cake recipe that you have tried then it is important that you include ‘Chocolate Cake Recipe’ in the post title or “Easy Chocolate Cake Recipe”.

Meta Descriptions: The page description is what the user/visitor will see in the search engine results page. So it has to be descriptive and brief. Up to 150 characters and unique for each page. You must take the opportunity to advertise your page and convince the searcher to click on your link and visit your website. Many people and businesses forget to include a meta description for their pages. These descriptions are an important area to include relevant keywords for your content, as these are used within the search results when your page is listed.

Formatting: A page needs to be properly formatted. For example: think of it like a report which needs to have heading (h1) and sub headings (h2) tags. Important parts of the report can be highlighted with bold, underline or italicsDo not just put text on the page. Try and make sure that it is readable as well. 

Images: Images are important but these should not increase the loading time of the website. No one likes a slow loading website. Best practices for using images are:

1) Use original images.

2) Optimise the size of the images

3) Use ALT tag to describe the image

4) Use descriptive file names

People are often mistaken that the only links that count are those from other websites. While these links are important, they are not the only important links. Placing links to other website pages, is a great way of improving your site’s authority. If used properly internal links can be a very useful weapon in SEO. It make it much easier for your visitors to navigate around your site and find all of your content easily and it also ensures that your site gets properly crawled allowing search engines to find all of your pages. There are a number of different methods that you can use to improve your internal linking efforts. The two main are: content links and permanent navigation links. Content links are very useful for bloggers when used properly. These links are placed within your article posts and redirect people to other relevant pages on your website.

Linking to pages within your website is very important for SEO because:

It’s like building your own web outreach: When people arrive at your page, if you don’t have any other links within the text they will read your page and go but if you have links pointing to other pages within your site then they may stay longer on your website and explore more.

It’s a way to tell search engines know about your other pages: When search engines find a page with links they will go and read those pages as well. Hence you can use this technique to tell search engines about different pages of your website that  they have not discovered yet.

It’s a way to show search engines which are your most important pages: Every website has some pages that are more important than the others. Internal linking is one of the ways to pin-point the most important pages.

It’s a way to increase time spent on site: A user that is reading your post is more likely to click on a link to read more about a certain subject. This increases both the time spend on your website and the number of pages per visit.

Categories: By grouping your pages into categories users and search engines can find what they want faster. It’s like having a warehouse with loads of uncategorised items vs a warehouse with all the items assigned to a dedicated category. You can then have many sub-categories as well.

Breadcrumbs: A breadcrumb is a very important factor for all your pages because it allows users to easily navigate your website in a structured way as they will always know where they are and how deep below they are of the home page.

User Sitemap: This is an html file that represents and shows the structure of your website.


These 5 techniques are just some of the ways to improve your on-page SEO. Any one used independently of the others will not make much of a  difference to your site ranking. However, when they are all used together, can help to improve your site traffic. These techniques will help to get your pages working better, and get your entire site crawled by search engine spiders. On- Page techniques will help increase the value of your internal pages and will help build and increase the relevancy of internal pages to specific keyword phrases.
