The most sought after video streaming and video sharing platform- YouTube which is pretty much famous with the youngsters has something in store for the kids as well.

According to a report, it is suggested that the company was working on the kid-friendly model of the products since last December. The report also suggests that the new Android app is set to be unveiled by the video-sharing website on February 23rd, Monday. The company is planning to announce the new app on Monday, when YouTube executive Malik Ducard is scheduled to give the keynote address at Kidscreen Summit, a conference for the children’s entertainment industry.

The new app from Google Inc’s online video service will be available on the Android smartphones and tablets which is likely to feature all the original episodes of all the popular television shows for the preschoolers, that includes “Thomas The Tank Engine’ and ‘Sesame Street’ as well. Not only this, there will also be content from most of the kid-safe channels, that are already featured on YouTube. Amongst others are  “Reading Rainbow” and “Mother Goose Club”.

A demo of the new app reveals a home screen dominated by eight large tiles showcasing images from popular kids shows. Above them hover five simple icons, a TV set for programs such as Thomas the Tank Engine and Yo Gabba Gabba; a radio for video renditions of popular songs; a lightbulb for educational programming such as Khan Academy; and binoculars to explore a range of top videos.

The ‘YouTube Kids’ is going to be absolutely free and will be completely separated from the mainstream YouTube mobile app. Since this app is going to cater to the needs of kids, so the look and feel is designed in the same format. This simply implies that the design is purely kid-friendly having big and bulbous icons and the scrolling will be minimal.

In launching an app aimed at children, Google will have had to comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, which is overseen by the Federal Trade Commission. Among other COPPA rules, websites that cater to kids must notify parents if they collect personal information.

Reportedly, the app will include features that are meant for the parents such as a timer which can be used to put a limit on how much video can the children watch. For the time-being, this app will not be made available on for the Apple Inc.’s iPad users.

Digital age is for everybody irrespective of age, gender etc. Good to see that YouTube is coming up with something exclusively for kids. Something to keep the young buds busy with quality stuff. Cheers !!
