How to Build a Rewarding Career in Digital Marketing Industry

I still remember the excitement about IT/Software in late 90s and early 2000. Surely, that was one of the best times for people to enter into IT industry. Even those who joined GNIIT program at that point of time could accelerate their career and moved to respectable position within few years.

That’s exactly the phase Digital Marketing industry is undergoing today. The Wave associated with this industry is so strong today that it’s undoubtedly the best time to be part of this fast-growing industry. Being part of this industry since last 16 years, I believe these are some of the top reasons to build a rewarding career in Digital Marketing industry in 2016:

Top 5 Reasons for a Rewarding Digital Marketing Career

  • Digital Marketing to offer 1.5 Lakh Jobs by 2016: According to an Aug’14 article in Times of India, over 1.5 Lakh jobs are expected to be created in Digital Marketing space by 2016. While this number would include various kinds of Digital Marketing Career profiles including technical & analytics, the demand for skilled professionals in Online Marketing is always going to exceed the available talent pool. While a large number of brands and agencies don’t advertise for jobs related to Online Marketing, there are over 2000 jobs on Naukri.com. Interestingly, ‘Social Media Marketing’ alone has over 1700 jobs associated with it. I thought of comparing it with other popular industries and noticed 642 jobs for ‘big data’.
  • A Digital Marketing professional earns between Rs 15,000 and Rs 250,000: Given the increasing gap between demand and supply of Digital Marketing professionals, a Digital Marketer commands a much higher average salary compared to other industries. A graduate with no work experience can expect a monthly salary of Rs 15,000 and a Head of Digital Marketing in a large brand or agency can earn Rs 2.5 Lacs per month.

Here’s a rough range of Salary associated with titles earned by Digital Marketing professionals based on their education qualification and professional background. This doesn’t take into consideration exceptional educational background (e.g. IIT/IIM) or professional experience. Professionals working in high growth startups or (e.g. LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Google) earn over Rs 1 Crore annual salary at senior position.

Kinds of Job Opportunities in Digital Marketing Industry

Based on your interest, you can choose to work in either of the following 3 kinds of organisations as a digital marketing professional. The kind of work and variety of job profiles make online marketing career even a bigger opportunity.

  • Digital Marketing Agency: There are number of small, mid and large digital marketing agencies, who serve their clients by offering various kinds of digital marketing services across SEO, SEM, Social Media Marketing etc. Even a traditional advertising agency is forced to offer digital marketing service. If you work in such an agency then you get an opportunity to work with multiple clients and enjoy the variety of work. However, you are unlikely to build depth as it would be practically impossible to go deeper for a particular client unless you are working for a particular brand.
  • A brand leveraging Digital Marketing: You can also choose to work for a particular brand or an organization, who’s actively leveraging digital marketing for it’s own growth. Unlike working for a digital marketing agency, where you enjoy variety, you acquire in-depth expertise when you work for a particular organization.
  • Digital Marketing Tool/Platform Company: Another opportunity to grow in your career in digital marketing is to work for tool or platform companies such as Google, LinkedIn, Facebook, Adobe, Salesforce. The kind of work and associated learning in these kinds of companies is going to vary a lot and will be quite different compared to working at an agency or a brand. Also, such job opportunities are limited but these kinds of jobs will offer much higher salary.

In addition to these full-time jobs in digital marketing, one can opt for freelancing/part-time/work-from-home opportunities in this industry.

Popular Job Profiles in Digital Marketing

As shared earlier in this article, based on your experience, your skills (both technical and non-technical such as communication, creativity, analytical skills) and your interest, you can consider following Job Profiles:

  • Digital Marketing Executive: At an entry level, you are likely to join an organization as a digital marketing executive (or may be SEO executive, Social Media Marketing executive, Search Engine Marketing executive). You are likely to working under a team lead or manager and perform multiple tasks including research, content development, testing etc.
  • Digital Marketing Specialist: After acquiring reasonable (i.e. 2+ years) experience in a particular domain such as SEO or SEM, you will be promoted to a specialist position such as SEO Expert or SEM Expert or Community Lead or Content Marketing Expert. At this position, while you will report to your manager, you will make lot of decisions independently.
  • Digital Marketing Manager or Team Leader: With 2-4 years of experience, you will be working as a Manager or Team Leader, e.g. SEO Manager, SEM Team Lead. At this position, you will be managing a team and will directly contribute to strategic as well as tactical plans for the organization.
  • Digital Marketing Strategist/Analyst: In organizations or agencies where there’s strong focus on aspects such as SEO, SEM, Social Media Marketing, there’s a need of skilled professionals for Strategic & Analytics roles. While team leads or managers will continue to head respective teams, these profiles will guide them more like consultants to improve their overall effectiveness. An analyst may contribute to teams across multiple departments as well.
  • Head of Digital Marketing: As the title says, a Digital Marketing Head is the senior most profile in this domain. In organizations where integrated marketing campaigns exist, Digital Marketing Head will report to Head of Marketing or CMO, who would be responsible for overall marketing function.

Since Internet Marketing industry is still at evolution phase, the above roles are yet to be standardized and may also vary based on the type of organization, i.e. an agency or a brand or a tool provider. Continuous learning and growth opportunities for all the profiles listed above make digital marketing career a great choice for both students and professionals.

  • Head of Marketing/VP Marketing/CMO (Chief Marketing Officer): While these are profiles, which are not technically digital marketing profiles, it’s important to note that any marketer who wants to rise to these top positions MUST know digital marketing really well.

Professionals at these positions are unlikely to play a direct role in digital marketing campaigns execution but will play a very critical role in defining integrated marketing strategy, plan resources (both internal and external), define metrics and analyze performance for continuous improvement.

Skills Required for a Successful Digital Marketing Career

In addition to the technical skills (e.g. about SEO, SEM, Social Media Marketing), following are the skills you would need to be a successful Digital Marketing professional. To the degree one has these skills to the same degree one can expect success & growth as a digital marketer.

  • Creativity: Given the amount of content & conversations on digital medium, creativity plays an important role in differentiating a brand among its peers.
  • Analytical Ability: Given measurability is one of the key strengths required, analytical skills are critical to be a successful digital marketer.
  • Communication Skills: For most of the profiles in this domain, good communication skills especially written communication are important. In absence of good communication, one has to rely on an external resource and that’s not always feasible & is inefficient.
  • Quest for Learning: Given the dynamic nature of digital media, one has to be open and should be hungry to learn newer trends & skills to move ahead of others.
  • Passion for Digital Media: Digital Marketing professionals who are genuinely passionate about digital media will surely see more success coming their way in terms of results of their campaign and their career growth.
  • Multitasking: Most of the internet campaigns involve multiple digital media channels and continuous activities. In order to successfully manage this spread of online marketing campaigns, multitasking is another important skill for any digital marketer.
  • Networking: As shared earlier, Quest for Learning is a desired attitude in any digital marketing professional. Networking skills (especially online) play an important role for any digital marketer to stay abreast about latest trends & techniques in internet marketing.
  • Comfort with Technology: While knowledge or experience of technology is not required for a digital marketer, one’s comfort with technology and associated changes is another important element for success in online marketing.
  • Willingness to Experiment: Digital Marketing is an evolving field and there are no defined rules for success. One’s willingness and ability to experiment in digital marketing also plays an important role in determining the success of such campaigns.

FAQs about Digital Marketing Career

Given the number of questions asked on this blog, I thought of creating a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for your benefit:

  • Do I need to know technology to be successful Digital Marketing professional?: This is one of the most frequently asked questions about career in digital marketing. To be successful as a digital marketer, you don’t need to know technology. However, if you know basics of HTML, it will be useful.
  • How important are communication skills?: For most of the positions e.g. Social Media Marketing, SEO, SEM, Email Marketing, good communication skills especially written English is necessary. Here’s a list of top 25 grammatical mistakes one should avoid by HubSpot.
  • Should I look for internationally recognized Digital Marketing certification?: Given the fact that this industry is still evolving and hands-on/practical skills are most important, one should not worry too much about the kind of certification. For the same reason, industry certifications like HubSpot Inbound Marketing, Google AdWords & Analytics doesn’t carry any significant weight.
  • Do I need to be a graduate?: While your educational qualification may play a role in terms of your career growth in digital marketing especially in large corporations, it’s not a major factor for success herein. Interestingly, brands & agencies who ask for MBA as a pre-requisite for digital marketing profiles actually end up missing some great talent.
  • Should I specialize in areas such as SEO/SEM or learn entire Digital Marketing?: At current stage of the industry and for the reason that various digital marketing avenues contribute to the success of others (e.g. Social Media plays a role to improve SEO rankings), I don’t recommend you start your career by looking specialization.
  • I am already an SEO expert. Should I learn other aspects in digital marketing?: For the reason mentioned above, a digital marketing professional such as SEO/SEM/Social Media Marketing/Email Marketing expert must broader his/her horizon to be able to rise to senior job roles in this particular industry.

Good to know your interest in learning digital marketing. Interestingly, 25% of digital marketing course participants have 10+ years of experience and normally come from traditional sales & marketing background. Given your years of experience, it doesn’t make sense to consider switching to digital marketing profile. However, given large organizations and high growth startups require senior marketing professionals to manage integrated (i.e. traditional + digital) marketing campaigns, you should look for such roles after acquiring digital marketing skills.

        Pradeep Chopra   /   Reply

Abhijit: As a marketing professional, you don’t have choice to not acquire digital marketing skills. Given marketing is becoming truly integrated (i.e. offline + online), you should look at senior marketing roles in which your previous marketing experience (preferably your domain expertise as well) can be leveraged along with newly acquired digital marketing skills.

For the same reason, it’s relatively difficult for us to provide you direct placement support. However, the skills (e.g. how to leverage your presence on platforms such as LinkedIn) you will learn in our digital marketing program along with your previous experience should help you accelerate your career compared to your peers who have not learnt digital marketing. Neha: Glad to know your interest in learning digital marketing. I wouldn’t say you should think about shifting from TV Advertising to Online Advertising unless you’ve insignificant experience (i.e. less than 2 years), which you can let go. If you have higher experience then you can consider growing yourself as an integrated marketing professional (i.e. digital + tv) as well.

I’m approaching my final year of B.E.Comps from Mumbai University and interested in making a career in digital marketing . Would it be a good career choice once I graduate in 2017 to work for some organisation as a digital marketing professional since I’m not much in to coding ? Do you have students from engineering background who have acquired satisfactory placement in digital marketing through your certifications ? In case I plan to move to Middle East (Dubai) after graduation , will I be able to get a Digital Marketing expert job there with a satisfactory package ? Awaiting your reply .

Devam: Glad to know your interest in building career in digital marketing. If you are not interested in coding side, surely digital marketing is a great career choice. Globally, good % of digital marketing professionals come from engineering background including myself. Even in our digital marketing certification program, around 15% of participants are engineers. Interestingly, UAE/Dubai is a great market for digital marketing professionals and after India, we get maximum participation from Dubai. Some of our participants, who’d done digital marketing training with us in India have also moved to Dubai. Here’s an interview of our alumni:

Gautam: As I’ve shared multiple times earlier, digital marketing is one of the core skills for any student or professional who’s into Management/Marketing. While it’s difficult to quantify about salary jump as it’s a function of multiple parameters, you can surely see different growth trajectory (compared to your peers) on acquiring digital marketing.

MBA degree is not required (though preferred) to be a successful digital marketing professional. Interestingly, a good % of digital marketing professionals come from IT/Tech/Engg background including myself :).

Sir,I want to start my career in freelancing site as a digital marketing freelancer so please suggest me how to learn digital marketing through online.

Amiyaranjan: In our experience, if someone wants to master various aspects of digital marketing especially SEO, SEM, Social Media Marketing, Email Marketing, Inbound Marketing & Web Analytics, 3-6 months (with around 4-8 hours/week) of comprehensive course is required. That’s how we’ve designed CDMM program.

Freelancing in digital marketing is a great opportunity and a % of our participants do that after the program.

      Hi!

I have 6 years of experience in the content industry, mainly dealing with education and recruitment. But I have always been interested in advertising and marketing. I wanted advice on:
      – Whether taking the course from Digital Vidya will help me break in to the digital marketing industry?
      – How much will not having direct working experience in marketing be an issue when it comes to getting employed or the compensation I will receive?
      – And what could I do to compensate for the lack of direct experience?
      – Also, do these digital marketing courses cover advertising (especially, the creative aspect of marketing)?

I worked on many unofficial advertising campaigns within the companies I worked with, with music and art work, and they were quite successful (I understand this is not the same as working in advertising and marketing but I just wanted to add some background).

Any advice from you will be helpful.

      Thank you.

b.) You may be able to get a job with same/similar salary as a digital marketing professional and change your profile from sales to digital marketing. In long term, the kind of growth you can expect as a digital marketing professional would be much better than a sales professional.

      Hi Pradeep,

Wishing you a great day ahead.

My name is Vaishak, and I am working as a software engineer in Chennai. I have been in Software for 4 years, and to be honest, I haven’t really enjoyed it at all.
I got the idea to start a cooking website (as cooking was one of my passions), and i started it a year back. That was how I actually came to know about this field of digital marketing. Since then, I have always wanted to work in digital marketing.
Now, in your comments, I know you have responded to this similar question by telling that, going in as a fresher isn’t that great.

So, How can I move to an intermediate position in Digital marketing?

I believe moving and starting out again is worth it considering that, I can get to work in something I like.
But its not easy when you are 27, and earning about 28k in hand.

How can I start out and get into this field. I do agree that starting as a fresher is going to be tough for me psychologically, but what are the other ways I can bridge the gap.

I wont expect a 28k to start with, even 23-25k would be still good for me because, I can still improve my skill in the long run. Please share your opinion in this matter. I would love to hear from you.

      Thanking you
      Regards

Vaishak: Glad to know your interest in building career in digital marketing. Considering your interest and background, I can think of following opportunities of acquiring digital marketing skills for you:
1.) Realize your passion of building business around cooking: For any business today, digital marketing is one of the core skills to build brand or acquire customers.
2.) Career in Digital Marketing: With 4 years of experience in IT and with good communication skills, it’s not unrealistic to demand Rs 3 Lacs package after you’ve learnt digital marketing in-depth. Especially if you apply for digital marketing role (which requires some technical aspects, e.g. if marketing automation is part of digital marketing profile) in an IT industry (mid to large companies), your experience & domain expertise will be appreciated and you can look at accelerating your career growth and yet do the job of your interest in digital media.

Sonam: No, you don’t require any degree/diploma for a job in digital marketing. Educational qualification is not a constraint for a rewarding career in this industry.

Madhuri: Glad to know your interest in digital marketing. Given you already have 6 years experience in Customer Service, I would not recommend you to consider switching to digital marketing directly as you will be considered a fresher.

You should look for profiles in which your existing experience is appreciated and digital marketing has an important role. For e.g. Social CRM (i.e. CRM profile with Social Media requirement) could be one such profile. Inbound Sales may also work well.

For you to master digital marketing in-depth, you should look at our flagship CDMM program.

        Hi Akhilesh,

Really happy to know your interest in digital marketing. Considering your years of experience, I would not recommend you to look for a job in digital marketing after you do a course in digital marketing as you will still be a fresher in digital marketing. However, as I’ve shared in this article (http://www.digitalvidya.com/blog/why-should-i-do-a-digital-marketing-course/), you can consider following opportunities on acquiring digital marketing skills:
a.) Offering digital marketing service as freelancer
        b.) Realize your entrepreneurial dreams
c.) Make money through affiliate marketing

        Hope this answer your queries.

        Best wishes,
        Pradeep

Hi Pradeep. Before I proceed with the questions I have, I want to appreciate the way you are answering everybody’s questions or doubts. I looked through the complete blog to see if I can find an answer for my questions from previous blogs. While I found some of my questions answered I still have following questions.
      1) I have 10 years of work ex, out of which ~5 yrs into Order to cash – Acconts receivable domain, and another 5 years into process excellence. Currently I am working as a Black Belt – Process excellence (Manager level). My core job profile includes Problem solving, data analysis, root cause analysis, finding optimized solutions for business problems, identifying problems in the process my self and show solution etc., considering all this, what kind of a digital marketing job should I choose, and what level is suitable for me looking at my stage/age?
      2) Will they consider my experience?
      3) What are the best courses / certifications that I should go for, based on the profile you are suggesting in my 1st question?

Anand: Thanks for your kind words. Since all of your questions are related, I will answer them together:

Considering your experience and profile, I would not recommend you to learn digital marketing to position yourself as a digital marketer as you will still be considered a fresher.

Offering digital marketing services as a freelancer or realizing your entrepreneurial dream (if you have) could be potential reasons for you to acquire digital marketing skills. Else I would advise you to learn data analytics, which is closer to your experience and expertise. Hope this helps.

Hi, I’m planning to pursue MBA in a distance learning format. While searching for the specializations amongst HR, Marketing, Finance etc. I came across an option to pursue MBA in digital marketing. Could you share exactly about MBA in digital marketing and it’s scope for career prospects?

        Pradeep   /   Reply

Harsimran: Glad to know your interest in learning digital marketing. In our experience, none of the educational institutions is able to do justice in offering a digital marketing program as all of them presence an academic (vs industry relevant) and theoretical (vs practical) sides of digital marketing. Accordingly, I would not recommend an MBA in Digital Marketing.

To answer your query in depth, we recently created a blog post: http://www.digitalvidya.com/blog/mba-digital-marketing-vs-certification/

Hope this helps. All the best!
