Top 7 Common SEO Mistakes you should Avoid

In the following post, we’ve highlighted the top 7 common SEO mistakes you should avoid.

1) Using the Wrong Keywords

One of the most common mistakes in SEO is selecting keywords is neglecting the preference of search engines. It’s more important to understand what words your potential customers would use than how you want to define your product. Next, Are you using your primary keyword in places like the page URL, the page title, main heading, and first paragraph? If so, you’re using keywords in a way that search engines can correctly index your page.

Build a list of relevant keywords and keyword phrases that searchers might use. After that use this list of keywords as organically as possible in your website’s content.Using tools like Google AdWords KeywordPlanner, Google Trends, SEMrush and Moz Keyword Explorer can help immensely to touch on the pulse of trending and adequate keywords.

2) Not Focusing on Relevant Content

There’s nothing more disappointing than when an otherwise great business has a poor content on its website. If you’re just posting gibberish which is full of keywords, you’re doing nothing for your search rankings. Consumers prefer websites having relevant content that can be found easily.

Remember, search engines are well versed to these “black hat” methods these days. Some examples of black hat SEO are buying referral links, over stuffing keywords on your web pages, plagiarizing content from another website. If you can’t write relevant content yourself, then hire a content writer which will help you with it.

3) Plagiarizing Content

Copying other people’s work is NOT OK even in the internet world. Stealing from a competitor’s website is not only illegal but you’ll get penalized by Google. Run your content through a plagiarism checker like CopyScape before you place any it on your website. Google wants your website to be original and unique. So be at your creative best.

4) Not Focusing On Website Speed Optimization

We rarely think of it SEO in terms of website speed optimization. We focus on keywords, keyword density, meta information, etc but this. Let’s say your website takes 10 seconds to load and your competitor’s website takes 3 seconds to load, assuming all other SEO factors remain the same — Google will rank your competitor’s website above yours in the SERPs.

There are several ways for improving how quickly your website loads.

5) Thinking You Don’t Need Analytics

The only way to know if your SEO optimization and content efforts work is to track their progress. If you’re not looking at the data you have no idea on what is performing well, what is under performing and what the general traffic patterns are. Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools are just two of the main tools. You can use them to measure and get an overview of your website’s performance. When you look at the analytics data regularly then you’ll find ways to enhance the customer experience and increase conversions.

6) Not Focusing on Localized SEO

If you own a moving company in Mumbai, then it doesn’t matter if you’re the first search result for a man in Chennai who searches “cheap local movers”. If you’re a local business, you need localized SEO, period. Businesses should make sure that their NAP (Name, Address, Phone Number) are correct. And relevant to their industry as well as top search engines such as Google and Bing.

This shows the search engines that the business in question is established and sharing verifiable information in a number of different places.  And most importantly your customers will be able to find you easily.

7) Understanding of Backlink Process

One of the common mistake in the search engine world is to obsessing over the obtaining of backlinks. It is important to acquire backlinks naturally. Though every site needs mention from the credible website but its better to earn it organically. This does not mean that website should not concentrate on acquiring backlinks. But getting paid backlinks is seen favorably. The thumb rule is to earned their mentions by creating highly entertaining campaigns that creates great engagement with consumers.

Always try to implement best practice in SEO when possible. By correcting or avoiding these simple mistakes you can better optimize your brand’s SEO strategy. By implementing correct methods you will see immediate benefits This will make sure your brand will be seen and heard everywhere.

    Great Article Snehal Sawant..!!

SEO Experts also make some silly mistakes like “Not adding “Nofollow” tag to outbound links” and “Spelling”. The spelling mistake is the most common mistake by anyone so be careful about spelling.

    Hey Snehal
Thanks for the great tips! I’m new to online marketing, and this is really helpful! Since getting started, I’ve been bombarded by “spin writers” and such to create a TON of content quickly, but you seem to say that these search engines have become sophisticated enough to determine when your content is crap. Am I understanding that right?
