With the much-hyped festival of the bond of true love between siblings- Raksha Bandhan just round the corner, Facebook is all geared to grab the lucrative opportunity.

The company is launching the online shopping which will be termed as ‘Tied Together in India’ from 12th August – 29th August wherein Facebook is tying-up with GroupM, a renowned media agency. Going by a report by Economic Times, media agencies have stated that Facebook’s pitch note reads,

“unlock the power of social media that can reach 10 crore potential customers through this event.”

During conversation with Economic Times, one of the media planners said: “Online shopping festivals have become a popular trend in India, especially with the rise in the number of e-commerce companies, which are driving the growth of online shopping in the country.” He additionally stated that “Facebook should be viewed as another media vehicle which has a huge database that can be utilized for commercial purposes.”

“Companies like Amazon, Flipkart and other ecommerce companies can host an online festival on their own website. But companies like Google and Facebook need to create a new one to host a shopping festival. The idea is to create online intellectual properties (IP) and to make them annual events,” stated another media planner.

Facebook would charge within a range of  2 – 20 from advertising companies on basis on “per click”. “For media agencies that associate with such events there are no immediate financial returns and it is a long-term plan,” he added.

Shopping mania is at its all-time high especially during the festive season in the country, so Facebook tapped the right platform at the apt time to lure a whopping population of over 11.2 crore to shop online. At presently, Facebook is busy arranging for sponsors for the event.

On the similar lines, Google had been actively involved in many such shopping fests which include Grand Diwali Mela in 2014, in association with GroupM and Amazon, the Great Online Shopping Festival in 2013, the Great Indian Travel Festival (GITF) in association with IPG Mediabrands in 2015, property festival- the Great Online Home Festival in association with Magicbricks and GroupM.
