Workshop On Design Thinking By Shouvik Roy At Great Indian Marketing Weekend (GIMW), 2014

Shouvik Roy, Director of Elephant, Delhi presented on Design Thinking. He shared following definition of design thinking –

“Design thinking is a human-centered approach to innovation that draws from the designer’s toolkit to integrate the needs of people, the possibilities of technology, and the requirements for business success.” —Tim Brown, president and CEO – IDEO

As per Mr. Shouvik, the design thinking approach is:

  1. To re-define problem from user point of view (empathy)
  2. Go for fresh ideas (not improvements)
  3. Iterate with rough & early prototype (fail early)

Design thinking is all about adding value and this can be done:

  1. By being empathic; people first approach
  2. By being an integrative thinker – for nut just ‘better’ but ‘different’.
  3. By being an optimist (no matter!)
  4. By being an experimentalist (against tweaking; against incremental)
  5. By being collaborative (every added piece adds value).

Overall, this workshop not only defined but also explained Design Thinking in a short span of time.
