As per the statistics put forward by Top Charts, Twitter has 200 million plus registered users and there are 155 million tweets every day on an average, and there are approx 4,60,000 people who join Twitter daily. Well, that’s a huge number! However, there is a downfall and continuous battle among Twitter and other social media apps.

Twitter originally an online social networking service is now categorized under the “news” section in the Apple Store for apps.

Twitter Earlier

This social networking site enables users to send and read short 140 character messages. These tweets can be read and posted by registered users. Based in San Francisco, Twitter Inc. has more than 25 offices across the globe. Launched in July 2006, it gained worldwide popularity in 2012, when more than 100 million users posted 340 million tweets a day. Twitter was one of the ten most visited websites and has been described as ‘the SMS of the Internet’.

Twitter Now

This micro-blogging website Twitter is no longer pitted against social networks like Facebook. Twitter is now a news app.

“Starting today (Friday), Twitter is categorized under the ‘news’ section of the App Store rather than ‘social networking’. It is a change that makes a lot of sense and fits with both how Twitter has positioned itself as well as how it is being used,” the technology website Engadget reported.

Twitter is known for real time events and news feeds, unlike Facebook. Though it is preferred less when there is a need to keep in touch with friends. Twitter is more about following people with same interest and those who share things you find informational and relevant without having to know them.

As per the reports, one of the biggest new features the service launched in the last year was Twitter Moments. This shows its focus on curating the best commentary surrounding current happenings. This is one of the best things that has happened for Twitter. With Twitter being under the news category of the App Store has helped Twitter gain more visibility than before. The fall of Twitter’s shares in the market was as sharp as about 12% after which this ‘news app’ managed to add 5 million people to take its monthly active user base to 310 million.

As per the company record, the revenue in the first quarter of this year (as ended on March 31) was $595 million. It jumped by 36% from $435.9 million in the same quarter of 2016 but missed the $607.9 million expected as per the analysts. The net loss posted by Twitter was $79.7 million as compared to its earlier year’s loss of $162.4 million.

“We remain focused on improving our service to make it fast, simple and easy to use” Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey

Twitter’s predicted revenue for the second quarter between $590 million and $610 million much lower than the $678 million analysts assumed. According to Dorsey, the engagement on Twitter is shooting up. Direct messages are up about 50% year-over-year and tweets shared through DM or direct message is up more than 75% quarter-over-quarter.

“Revenue came in at the low end of our guidance range, as brand marketers did not increase spend as quickly as expected in Q1,” the company tweeted.

Fighting Against Facebook is Avoidable

Well, Facebook being the guru of the social media world, Twitter constantly and consistently appeared underneath anywhere between the Facebook apps: Messenger, WhatsApp, and Facebook. Shifting from social to news category is a good way to avoid seeing all this. Being unnoticed is not fun after all.

Being tired of comparison to Facebook, Twitter jumped out of the whole category. Therefore, the reason is not to be at the top of some list but the whole comparison too. This category shift can boost the visibility among prospective users and Twitter doesn’t have to worry about its competitors like Facebook and WhatsApp. Though Twitter is not alone in the once social networking site cum news platform in the list. Reddit, now in second place on the list of top free news apps, is the only other major social network listed in the category.

It might take efforts for this app to be on top position among the news-minded audience. The platform’s reputation as a place for a real-time breaking news is a major selling point and a key differentiation from its rivals.

This news was announced after the company reported period of sluggish growth among the user in the company’s quarterly earnings report. Struggled for months to kick-start its stagnant user growth with a pinch of new features designed to make the platform more attractive and easy to use, Twitter is seeing a rise.

Problems For Twitter

However, there are challenges for Twitter in Apple Store as well. There is a problem with Apple Store is in making apps easily discoverable. This is a problem that has frustrated app developers for many years now. While search keywords often don’t show relevant apps in the results, there are problems with new apps to be indexed as it takes days to be searched.

Though Twitter has over 800 million people visiting the site and 1 billion-plus monthly unique visitors to the page that go through the Twitter content, still the stocks have fallen. It has disappointed the investors yet again. The drop in stock is as much as 20% and more, that too in the three months of this year. This sluggish growth is worrisome. The change in the category might provide some visibility to the app but there are challenges for Twitter to handle. Do you use Twitter?
