Google has launched a new India-centered app, YouTube Go which will be launched in India first. Users will have to sign up for it on the website to get the app.

Why Google Came Up With YouTube Go?

Announced at the Google event in India, the intent of coming up with YouTube Go was disclosed.

Along with YouTube Go, the company also revealed several new products aimed at the Indian market at a Google event in Delhi. These products will later make it around the world.

“In an increasingly mobile-first world, India gives us early insights into the future of the Internet,” Google CEO Sundar Pichai

He further added “Moreover, we learned the issues Indians may have with connectivity and data constraints can be universal.”

Different from the main YouTube app, users can leave their email id or mobile number to sign up for this, which points out that the sign-in could also be through phone numbers; unlike the mainstream YouTube app where you need a Google

The reason behind YouTube Go app is helping users in India save on data, save and share videos easily.

“YouTube Go is result of extensive research done across 15 cities in India by teams of engineers, designers, and researchers collecting ideas and testing prototypes with hundreds of people.” Google

“We realized that for the next generation of YouTube users to fully discover all that YouTube has to offer, we had to reimagine the YouTube mobile app from the ground up,” – Johanna Wright, YouTube Vice President for Product Management

She also said that connectivity should not be a barrier to watching YouTube.

Few of the improvements made by YouTube in the past are:

  • In 2014, YouTube launched the Offline version of YouTube to let users watch videos without waiting it to buffer every time.
  • Also, a few months back YouTube rolled out a feature called Smart Offline that allows you to schedule videos to be saved offline later at times when traffic is less and when there’s more bandwidth so data is cheaper and faster.

“With YouTube Go, we’re bringing the power of video to mobile users in a way that is more conscious of their data and connectivity, while being relatable and social,” she added.

How YouTube Go Works?

The YouTube Go app will have a new preview function which will help Indian users to get a quick preview of the video they are watching before making a decision to watch the video or save it.

On tapping the thumbnail on YouTube Go, you will open a quick preview of the video.

There will be trending and popular videos from close by on the homescreen of YouTube Go once you open the app.

Also, there will be an option of choosing their resolution when streaming a video or saving it. This will also show the amount of data the app requires before you decide to save or watch the video.

With YouTube Go, Indian users can share videos with friends who are close by. This might be an appealing feature to the users in

Google mentioned that the app relies on WiFi direct to get the data transferred and doesn’t rely on any internet access. Users can find their friends via Bluetooth on the phone and then share videos straight from the YouTube Go app.

However, the $1 billion worth company is facing challenges from Instagram and Facebook which are focusing on video in a massive way. By making improvements to YouTube Go, Google wants to make sure they are not on the losing side in a market like India where more people are expected to come on board and network connectivity still remains the hurdle.

The App is intended to work better in areas where the internet connectivity is limited!

What do you think about Google’s new move, YouTube Go app, to target the world’s largest economy?
